Rant about missing scans

I'm trying to get the illustrations of Adolphe Lalauze for the Thousand and One Nights. In the Internet Archive I find basically two versions:

One in 4 volumes:
Vol. 1: https://archive.org/details/lesmilleunenuits01gall/
Vol. 3: https://archive.org/details/lesmilleunenuits03gall_0/
Vol: 4: https://archive.org/details/lesmilleunenuits04gall/

One in 10 volumes:
Vol. 2: https://archive.org/details/lesmilleunenuits02gall/
Vol. 3: https://archive.org/details/lesmilleunenuits03gall/
Vol. 5: https://archive.org/details/lesmilleunenuits05gall/
Vol. 6: https://archive.org/details/lesmilleunenuits06gall/
Vol. 7: https://archive.org/details/lesmilleunenuits07gall/
Vol. 8: https://archive.org/details/lesmilleunenuits08gall/
Vol. 9: https://archive.org/details/lesmilleunenuits09gall/
Vol. 10: https://archive.org/details/lesmilleunenuits10gall/

The title pages look almost the same, but the 10-volume one has red ink and says "Vingt et une eaux-fortes par Ad. Lalauze", and the other one doesn't (but still has the illustrations).

As you can see, some volumes are missing, and the annoying part is that the two illustrations (according to the list given at the end of vol. 10) that would be in vol. 4 (of the 10-vol edition), should be in vol. 2 (of the 4-vol edition), and both are missing.

I've tried searching Hathi Trust, and Gallica, but I can't find any usable replacement. Can anyone find the missing volumes or, at least, the corresponding illustrations? These should be:

Histoire du second frère du barbier -- Nuit CLXXII
Histoire d'Aboulhassan -- Nuit CCIV

If you are still in Sweden, "Spaniard in Sweden", LIBRIS lists at least one exemplar of vol. 2 in Uppsala (university library, reading room only):

Interesting... I'm actually in Uppsala and working in the university, so I guess I could check. But how do you know it is any of these editions? There are other editions without (or with different) illustrations.

This is an english edition, but I think it has the two illustrations you need (Links go directly to the images):

https://hdl.handle.net/2027/njp.3210...end=%3Bseq=221

https://hdl.handle.net/2027/njp.3210...end=%3Bseq=327

Those are on Hathi, so if you are in Sweden, you may need a VPN to get at it. (I haven't checked if this edition are available anywhere else).

Kim

I can't but you probably can just ask them or order the books for the reading room and have a look yourself--you are really lucky that you are so close! LIBRIS turns up a number of exemplars of the Galland edition in various libraries, but mostly not very specific about the publication year.

Thanks. I don't have a VPN (or rather not a US one), so I can't see them. The title says "with nineteen original etchings", while the French edition has 21, I hope it's not the same two missing

Can you see if these are the illustrations (and which is which)?

(These are from Wikipedia, and are not in the set I have. The first one doesn't look like Lalauze's, although it is labeled as such.

If anyone could send me the scans (at the highest available resolution/quality), I'd be grateful (just PM me). Also, if the size is larger that the ones I have (about 550x800 pixels), I'd appreciate all other illustrations too, actually.

The two images from Hathi is attached to this message - the first one is not the one you got from the Burton edition - in the best quality I could get. I suspect they come from the same google-scan as the one on Wikipedia, so …

Regarding VPN, I had something like Cyberghost in mind - where you can choose an IP-adress in almost any given country around the globe. Both Google Books and Hathi yield somewhat different results, when maskerading as an american (and for those concerned: I wouldn't consider it piracy to use af VPN-client to get books that are public domain everywhere).

And as for getting the images in higher resolutions: At Archive.org, click "Show All" at the bottom of the list of download possibilities, and fetch any of the .jp2-archives. Those are usually the original scans, sometimes in colour and usually in a way better quality and higher resolution than the pdf or djvu files. (You will need an image editor capable of reading jpeg2000, and even then they can be quite a slow PITA to open.)

Kim

Right, the second one (Story of Aboul-Hassen) I don't think I have seen anywhere else so far. Thanks a lot!

Now this would be interesting to look into: http://link.umsl.edu/portal/21-etchi...n/a3BrebGcmGU/

Yes, I know how to get highest resolution from IA. For just getting a few pages, which is the case here, I choose the "View Contents" link next to the "raw_jp2.zip" file (or similar), then I can get the images as jpg, without messing with jpeg2000 (e.g. https://ia802705.us.archive.org/zipv...ft_raw_jp2.zip, only it takes a bit of hit and miss to find the correct file for a given page)[*]. But I don't know if a similar option is available from Hathi, so that's what I was asking for.

[*] ETA: I just (re-)realized that the jpgs obtained in this way have significant lower resolution that the jp2s. It's still a good way to download only the desired pages, instead of the full archive.

You're welcome

I don't think there are similar possibilities from Hathi - not for us ordinary mortals anyway (maybe if one has a partner login, which I don't).
