The factory firmware is signed so I believe it may be possible to use this on PW3s that have been OTA upgraded to firmware <= 5.9.6.1. When I copied it to my older PW3 (5.8.11 jailbroken), "Update your Kindle" became accessible instead of automatically deleting the update.bin which is what happens with 5.7.4 and 5.8.9.0.1. I have no intention of upgrading past 5.8.11 on my older PW3s though so I didn't go through with the process and just deleted the renamed update-3314460001-*.bin.

This has not been extensively tested and can brick your device. This is only for people willing to use their PW3 as guinea pig.

I tried this on a PW3 whose last previous update was OTA 5.9.6.1

I removed the 2 books on it, and did a reset since it was not fresh out of box.

The update to factory 5.9.6.1 worked, as did JB, hotfix, update to customer 5.9.6.1, and re-registration.

ETA: All the problems below were operator error.

AFAIK unjailbroken Kindle PW3 currently running 5.9.6.1 can be JB by following ilovejedd method documented in post #3281 on the previous page in this thread. It worked for me.

I am unable to find any option to get to list view for books, which I had been using on 5.6.9.1 on the same device.

I installed MRPI and KUAL, but am unable to find KUAL to launch (this was my first attempt to install booklet KUAL, I use the kindlet KUAL on my voyage and never got arounf to trying to install KUAL on my KOA2.)

I don't remember how I put usbnet on my Voyage or KOA2. I tried UYK method on the PW3, but the .bin file just disappears and the UYK option is grayed out. I can't find instructions for mrpi usbnet install (maybe I found them last year for my Voyage, I don't remember).

In any case, no bricking so far.

Note, KUALBooklet doesn't have a cover image and it can get buried in your library. I've noticed unlike the Kindlet version, the Booklet version doesn't go to recent so I normally just search for it. It's considered a personal doc so you can also filter based on that.

For usbnet, I believe you need to put it inside mrpackages folder then install via KUAL -> MrPI or via ;log mrpi. I don't know if it has any dependencies.

As for the List view, mine was in the filter menu (beside sort) in My Library. Of course, I just sideload my books with Calibre. Menu with registered Kindle might differ.

Turns out my KUAL problem was that I put coplate's zip file in the mrpackages directory and mrpi successfully installed KUAL, then successfully uninstalled it. When I put the unzipped Update_KUALBooklet_d20a095_install.bin in mrpackages it installed and works.

I have a PW3 (bought in Germany) that has been OTA updated to 5.8.9.2, at which point I installed the OTA blocker. Is it possible to make an educated guess how likely it is that ilovejedd's instructions will brick my device?

Snark aside, since this image is far newer, it probably has a better chance of dealing with weird specific hardware/revision quirks than the previous ones.

I think your safest route is to manually update to 5.9.6.1, do a reset, then follow ilovejedd's instructions.

I suspect no one knows whether your scheme will work, but since your version is lower than the factory version it is very reasonable to expect going straight to the factory version could work. I also suspect no one will know until someone tries it. Since your PW3 is not fresh out of the box new, a reset might be a good idea.

• Updated to 5.9.7 and then 5.10.1.1

• installed KUAL, Python, Screensavers...

So decided to take the plunge on a friend's OTA updated PW3.

PW3 4GB WiFi
Serial: G090 G105
Manufacture Date: Sep 16, 2015 (based on serial)
Firmware: 5.9.2 (safe to assume OTA updated)
Special Offers: unknown
Registered to Amazon: no
Source: ebay, used

• Copied update_pw3_5.9.6.1_factory.bin and main-htmlviewer.tar.gz to root (no reset, still has all the books and content intact)
• Menu > Settings > Menu > UYK
• Wait for firmware install to finish (made easy by watching a K-Drama while it does its thing; install time definitely much shorter than one episode)
• ran ;installHtml using search bar

Already got the "You are jailbroken" document. Haven't installed the hotfix yet (or anything else, really) but I don't expect to encounter any issues.

Thanks for your answer but nevermind, when looking up the serial number I realized the Kindle I had in mind isn't even a PW3 but a PW2. Too bad.
