New Kindle Exclusives from Newsweek - Political

Newsweek Brings Print Campaign Articles Back to Life Via Kindle

There will be *no* print counterparts.

Quote:
Newsweek is set to release four e-books this week, one on each of the presidential and VP candidates, that consist of pre-published print articles from the magazine.

Each e-book will sell for $9.99 and is only available on Amazon’s Kindle in an attempt to not only cut costs, but also decrease turnaround time and get the books out before the election.

While publishing an archive of election coverage isn't a new idea, this is the latest way that publishers are taking advantage of digital format to save money
Quote:
The only problem here is that the Kindle's proprietary file format will prevent anyone other than those willing to fork over 400 bucks for the device from reading the books. While Amazon thinks this may give them a leg up over competition, it certainly isn't a convenient or cheap way for voters to stay informed.
Edit: Slightly extended version from the New York Times.

In other words, more exclusive content that won't really help Any of the candidates as they've cut off a good amount of people who might have read some/all of these. Well done Newsweek (NOT).

Kindle Exclusives-- gotta love them, an attempt to increase marketshare by shrinking the market.

I think they would do better to sell their exclusives in Mobipocket format in addition to .azw. That could get some folks reading them on their computer or a mobile device. Once they see how convenient ebooks are, they might be more inclined to consider the Kindle. I don't see that these exclusives are going to bring in a lot of new folks.

Not sure if it was a decisive channel to exclude others so much as a quick way to take advantage of a distribution channel/relationship that they already have in place (Newsweek already sells subscriptions to Kindle users via Amazon).

No way would I fork over $10 to read carp like this. Like any of those people would tell the truth about anything!

Rant over.

Does anyone know if any of the other ebook retailers have been trying to cultivate relationships with magazines and newspapers?
