It's probably not available in ebook format, but I found "The Oxford Book of Humorous Prose: From William Caxton to P.G.Wodehouse. A Conducted Tour by Frank Muir", published in 1990, to be a very good introduction to about 250 different authors of humorous prose. Used copies of the hardback and paperback versions are available on Amazon for low prices.

Hilaire Belloc's Cautionary Tales for Children (1907) might appeal.

Also Ernest Bramah's Kai Lung books (1900-1940)

Recommend the Flashman series by George MacDonald Fraser. These are historical fiction that, apart from the hilarious mess ups Harry Flashman gets into, are historically very accurate.

@pamplemousse, your avatar name reminds me of the Monsieur Pamplemousse series (retired French Detective and Restaurant critic) by Michael Bond (who also wrote the Paddington Bear books). I've quite enjoyed those books.

Any reason you chose to be a 'grapefruit'?

Haha, I'm not really sure why I chose the name to be honest - it was just the first word to come into my head

Having said that, maybe it's a sign I should check out the books by Michael Bond too!

Great list!
I've heard that Jorrocks is very entertaining. There are a lot of references in literature to the character, so the book must have be tremendously popular.

I think Surtees is a bit like Dickens - but with lots more emphasis on huntin' and sportin'.
For me, best enjoyed in small doses.

There's loads in that list I've never heard of, thanks!
