Hypothetical Universal eReader Device...
Hi!
Would you buy an eReader device that could be used to both read and purchase eBooks from BOTH Amazon and Barnes & Noble? |

That would be cool, but I doubt you'll ever see that.

An Android tablet already does it, with Nook/Kindle for Android apps. So could an iPad, with the appropriate apps.

Oops, forgot about Android/iPad...
I should have added that I was only thinking about an e-Ink reader.
Personally I find the LCD style of pad hard to read from. |

I installed the Nook app on my Kindle Fire, and it does exactly that.
Edit: Sorry, looks like I posted this at the same time that you clarified your question. |

Wouldn't and haven't bought from either Amazon or Barnes and Noble.
Reason, they do not use standard epub protocols. I find my books elsewhere. |

Amazon & B&N are both trying to feudalize a 21st C. technology. Let's not imagine that these people are "the wave of the future" when they are trying to sell you an ebook (that costs nothing to reproduce) at the same price (or more) than you pay for paperbacks --or even used/discounted hardcover books! Unless you like dystopian futures. . . |

The only way you could do that, is if you did something like root a Sony PRS-T1 and installed the android apps for Kindle and Nook.
Now, officially you'll never see anything that includes support for Kindle books and anything else. It is due to the EULA for the Kindle/Mobi SDK. You're unable to support the Amazon's DRM and any other DRM. |

"Universal ebook reader": Yes, I would like one of those.
"Ebook reader that reads Amazon and Barnes & Noble books": No, not interested. I don't buy from either. I don't buy DRM, nor from stores that don't indicate which of their books are DRM'd. So I don't really care how many types of DRM a reader supports; I won't be using that aspect. My current reader can do non-DRM'd epub and mobi just fine, although I'd love one that also read an easily-editable format like HTML or RTF. (Mine claims to read HTML. It lies. Software that hyphenates the word "years" is not supporting the filetype.) |

My android tablet does that.
I probably wouldn't buy this hypothetical device (and anyway, isn't this just the rooted Nook STR?) , because I can just use Calibre to convert from epub and put the resulting book onto my Kindle anyway. |

Yes, any e-reader + Calibre conversion can do easily it. So my needs are basically covered.
To read it directly without disinfecting and converting the files you would need an e-ink device running Android. In a year or two I might buy a Mirasol or color e-ink reader running Android, that would be a big step forward. But I wouldn't get an Android B/W e-ink reader. |

I wouldn't mind a straight e-ink reader that could handle both stores.
