Sony PRS-300 vs Kindle, which one has the faster processor

Hi

I have a Sony PRS-300 and a Kindle 2.

1. Which one has the faster processor? It seems that Sony PRS-300 chokes on large ebooks in the EPUB format, EPUB books that have more then a 1000 pages.

2. Is there anything special you have to take into consideration when creating an Ebook in EPUB for Sony PRS-300?

Example: The Firefox EpubReader needs a different TOC then the Stanza Reader. We are creating two individual files for both devices.

Thank you for your Feedback.

This isn't a CPU speed issue, it is if anything to do with hardware this is a main memory size issue. Look in the E-book Reader Matrix for this kind of information, but in general ebook processing does not require a very fast processor.

There is so far as I know no limit on the total size of an ePub for the PRS-300, but on all Sony Readers (except perhaps the PRS-900) there is a limit on the size of each individual HTML/XHTML file that make up the ebook. These are typically chapters (one per XHTML file) and EPUB Best Practices Guide By the Adobe Digital Publishing Team Version 1.0.3 August 2008 says:
Quote:
For Adobe Digital Editions, you will need to keep chapters under 300k in size when uncompressed and under 100k when compressed. Images must not be larger than 10MB when uncompressed. If these limits are not adhered to, EPUB files will not work on supported mobile devices including the SONY® Reader Digital Book.
If your ePub is DRM-free then running it through Calibre (ePub -> ePub conversion) with the default target will fix these kinds of issues. However, I don't think it currently handles embedded fonts. If you already have a Kindle version, try MOBI -> ePub via Calibre.

Shall I send you a complete file to test? My Sony PRS-300 crashes with the EPUB file that is 24 MB big.

Calibre chokes on our file size. We have our own EPUB creator: http://scm.ywesee.com/?p=ebps/.git;a=summary

Also our files are all within the mentioned limits above. The files open perfectly well on Stanza and Firefox.

Not sure what's the purpose of the question. AFAIK, Kindle doesn't support EPUB at all, neither large files, nor small. Its processor speed is irrelevant.

I don't know if the older version of Adobe Mobile supported the EPUB files this size. Not sure that too many people would be bothered anyway - most books are much smaller. You may want to try your large file on PRS-900, which utilizes the current version of Mobile ADE.

How much faster is the PRS-900 ADE processor compared to the PRS-300?

My question is the following: On kindle the same book is more or less navigable. On Sony PRS-300 the book can not be opened. The whole device crashes.

I noticed that the fastest processors come with the iPhone 3GS, the new HTC 2D. But which Ereader has the fastest processor? Anybody? Is it Kindle, is it Sony, is it Asus? Anybody?

The PRS300 has a 200MHz processor. The PRS600, PRS900, and Kindle 2 have a 532MHz processor. But as the others mentioned, there is more involved than processor speed. The amount of internal memory and the eBook reading software embedded on the device have a lot to do with how eBooks are displayed. Perhaps the most important factor is how well the eBooks are formatted.

I have a PRS300 and find that some of the Sony DRM ePub books are very slow to open, if they open at all. However, after I deDRM them (strip away the DRM) and tweak them in Calibre they open fine. In these cases the problem is NOT the processor speed, it is the terrible formatting used to create the ePubs for the Sony store.

Check this: http://www.lexcycle.com/node/2052

2G and 3G iPhones can not open the file. They run out of memory, stanza crashes on the EPUB file. 3GS can open the EPUB file, no problem. If you load the .mobi file onto iPhone 2G and 3G via Kindle's iPhone App it opens perfectly well and is fast.

The creation of the Kindle-File takes 4 hours. The creation of the EPUB file takes 15 minutes.

The Kindle's primary book format is Mobipocket. It also has extremely primitive support for PDF.

@jswinden - thanks for the processors speeds. Any idea which new Ebook-Readers are coming up with a fast processor? What about the big Kindle, does it have the same processor as the small Kindle?

Are you OK? If you keep repeating the same false statement over and over again, it doesn't become true, you know?

The processor speed doesn't have anything to do with being able to open the file. It is the memory, or the version of the software that can be different. You have to compare apples to apples, and you keep repeating that Kindle can open the MOBI file that takes you 4 hours to make, but PRS-300 cannot open the EPUB file that takes you 15 minutes to make. Good for you! Why won't you try making an LRF file for PRS-300, or a valid EPUB file that is not 24 MB long? Is it an image-based EPUB? Or an illustrated encyclopedia? Why is it so huge - 24 MB?

And why won't you try using a newer generation ebook reader, such as PRS-900? Maybe it will be able to open your EPUB file...

The speed of the processor may have something to do with the time it takes the reader to open your file, but as a rule - not with whether or not the file can be opened at all.

1. If you want to have a look at our file, feel free. I will provide it to you free of cost.

2. Our file is a drug reference for all the drugs available in Switzerland. The printed book is about 4kg heavy and has over 3200 pages in A4 size. Imagine that in your mind or have a look at your local copy at your doctor.

3. I guess this does make the file a bit bigger then the ordinary book.

4. Let me know if you want to have a look at the book.

5. What is an LRF-file? As far as I understand the Sony-Reader only supports EPUB. But its processor is slow. I also do not like the navigation of the books in Sony PRS-300. That is not suitable for really large book. And really large books is where Ebook Readers become really useful because the Reader is lighter then the book!

6. I believe the processor also has something to do with how fast you can navigate in the book. HTC HD2 and iPhone 3GS have a very nice navigation in Stanza and Mobipocket, but that is the processor, that is not the book. Older WinMobile Devices I tested are just slower with the huge file.

7. 2G and 3G iPhones can not open the book. They run out of memory during the process. The iPhone 3GS has double the amount of RAM then the 2G and 3G.
