Tolino question
As the new Kindle does not offer a way to adjust the colour temperature I'm thinking about getting the new Tolino Shine 3. I have 2 questions though.
1. Could someone with a Tolino please tell me if it's possible to make the page numbers and what seems to be an empty bookmark on the upper right corner disappear while reading? I think especially the latter one would drive me crazy. I definitely prefer to have nothing but the text itself displayed. 2. My only other experience with epub readers was a Kobo and it was always a hassle to be able to adjust the line spacing with sideloaded books. Is that an issue with Tolinos? Thanks! Line spacing adjustments seems to work fine with sideloaded books. (I've also had the problem you speak about on some books on the Kobos.) |

Unfortunately there is no full screen mode for Tolino eReader (yet).

Okay. I guess it depends on how the book is setup then. I usually end converting ePubs anyhow, so maybe that's why I haven't noticed issues with the Tolino.

Thanks for your replies!
I guess the line spacing isn't that much of an issue thanks to Calibre but I'm not sure yet how much it would bother me that there is no full screen mode available. I need to take a closer look at the new Pocketbook Touch HD 3 too. |

Too bad if in Tolino you cannot maximize the space for text and drop externalities. Pocketbooks are much more common sense in this regard.
Can Koreader be installed on Tolino? It can on Kobos. |

I just ordered the Tolino Shine 3 as an addition to my kindles. I was entirely unwilling to wait any longer for Amazon to add a bluelight filter and since I received a coupon for new customers for one of the booksellers behind the Tolino, I saved 20% and so only paid 95.20 €. I simply could not resist and am very excited to play with it next week.
I still think it's very unreasonable to not offer full screen mode but I'll probably get used to it. And so far I've heard nothing but praise for the screen and the even lighting. |

If I was to describe Tolino's reading software I would say "simple" or maybe even "sparse." But I find I like reading on my Tolino Page, so I'm happy with it. They seem to do what they do well. And this is a the only reader I have were I was able to find a Latin to English dictionary (probably should be called a lexicon instead). |

Only if you root your Tolino. There were a couple of threads in German a few years back about using Koreader's Android builds on Tolinos. Remember Kobo is a pretty open Linux system while Tolino is an Android system. |

I've had the chance to play with my new Tolino Shine 3 and really like it as an addition to my kindles. Since I do prefer the Kindle software, I wouldn't want to have it as my only reader but the comfort light in the evenings is simply wonderful and well worth the purchase. It's been so much easier on my eyes in bed. If only I could read the Kindle Unlimited books on there as well ... Here's hoping that Amazon will offer a Kindle with bluelight reduction next year.
The screen really is phenomenal. The bottom right corner is a bit lighter in illumination than the rest of the screen which I'm guessing is the light bleed issue of the Kobo Clara. It's not very noticeable though and so doesn't bother me much. Other than that, the screen is better than that of my PW 3. What I dearly miss is the option to adjust the boldness of the fonts. I have become so used to this wonderful feature Amazon introduced to their kindles earlier this year. All my usual fonts are much too light on the Tolino, I have found two that look good on it and that I like but they are a bit too bold for my taste. I haven't yet figured out how to use Calibre to increase the line spacing in an epub for the Tolino. I've been doing it for years with epubs for my old Kobo Glo and azw3 files for my kindles without a problem. I also tried a few other tricks I found through Google but no matter what I tried in Calibre, the Tolino still stubbornly keeps to its own line spacing. All in all I'm happy with my purchase though. I love that I can load my own pictures to use as screen saver or can choose to have the current book displayed instead. The reduced weight compared to the PW is great as well. And I definitely don't want to miss the comfort light anymore. Last edited by Illyria; 11-01-2018 at 03:38 PM. |
