Is there a way to check same author but spelled slightly differently

I didn't really organize my earlier books. Some of them have the same authors but spelled sightly different, such as P. G. Wodehouse, P.G. Wodehouse, or PG Wodehouse.

So my question is, is there a search in calibre or plugin that searches for similar author names. I want to start standardizing some messes when I was a noob using calibre.

Thanks for the help.

For something like that, I would probably just sort by author and use the bulk metadata editor to fix them in one go. But, the Quality Check plugin can help. I don't think it has an option to find similarly spelt names, but it has options for finding names with initials, the wrong case, commas and other possible errors.

it should

The Quarantine and Scrub plugin may help, but it's a steep learning curve (i.e too hard for me).

I find the Manage Author list useful. I have author sort as LN, FN, by sorting on it I can spot and fix the P.G., PG, and P. G. variants. I also fix non hyphenated multi barrelled surnames, such as 'John, Madeleine St -> St John, Madeleine', 'Márquez, Gabriel García -> García Márquez, Gabriel'.

I find it easier to edit Manage XXX tables rather than editing Tag Browser XXX trees.

The only reason I prefer the Tag browser, is when I need to peek at the book to decide.
I use Manage to fix the OBVIOUS ones

I guess I'll try the plugin and if it's too much to learn, then I'll just use the manage authors. Thanks guys.

@moredrowsy - I suggest you only try Quarantine and Scrub if you decide the Find Metadata Variations option of Find Duplicates plugin is inadequate.

The Quarantine and Scrub add-on/plug-in is for changing existing trashed-out metadata, not for finding metadata variations as described in this thread. If you have thousands of (fiction) books with all of the metadata stuffed into the Author or the Title, for example, Q&S can sort it out and fix it for you. Finding variations is not at all what it is about.

I wrote Q&S to scrub clean and enhance the metadata for a 50,000 EPUB fiction library. A learning curve to do this is trivial compared to the effort to do each of 50,000 ebooks individually and serially.

The OP of this particular thread does not describe a scenario that cost-justifies using Q&S.

My Multi-Column Search plug-in used with some creativity is more appropriate for finding metadata variations than Q&S. See the the generic "Raw SQL Query Tab" functionality, and/or the "Final Filters" functionality.

Attached is an example of how to use the MCS plug-in to find metadata variations in Calibre in general, and for Authors in particular.
