ePUBCHECKER errors

I have three volumes, the second two are OK, the first one has this particualar error twice: 'AUTHOR': fragment identifier is not defined

1) /tmp_45edabc97a4f32ec211e103c0d3eefa0_S4Rjiy.ch.fix ed.fc.tidied.stylehacked.xfixed_split_028.html(23) : 'AUTHOR': fragment identifier is not defined in 'tmp_45edabc97a4f32ec211e103c0d3eefa0_S4Rjiy.ch.fi xed.fc.tidied.stylehacked.xfixed_split_000.html'

2)/toc.ncx(13): 'AUTHOR': fragment identifier is not defined in 'tmp_45edabc97a4f32ec211e103c0d3eefa0_S4Rjiy.ch.fi xed.fc.tidied.stylehacked.xfixed_split_000.html'

How and where do I have to define the identifier? What does the identifier look like and what should it be?

The code of the *.EPUB file? What software do I have to use to extract the code from the *.EPUB type of a file?

There is a file in the folder in which I was working that's named "toc-mbp_toc_intermediary.xml". I'm not sure if it ended up being used in the creation of the EPUB file, but here's its content:

With what program did you create this? It looks awful!
Try to avoid spaces in filenames when you can. Further more, there are no relative links in there, but actual links. That is bound to give problems.

That looks like something that Mobipocket Creator would produce.

As for opening the epub, it is just a zip file with the .epub extension. Open it with your usual zip archive program. You will have to be careful when you re-pack it though.

Once you have unzipped it, look for the files referred to in the error message and see what's there.

Before we can actually read your sample code, please redo it with small filenames with no spaces so it's actually readable. As it is now, it just looks like a mess.

I opened the XML file in Microsoft WordPad. But spaces replaced by "%20" are really not the culprit according to the error messages,as far as I can see, are they?

Please no. It's going to be a mess. Let him redo this with short filenames that have no spaces first.

Spaces are not the problem, but it makes it unreadable. However, the local filepaths are not correct. Please make them relative.

Again, what program did you use to make this .... mess?

OK. I've replaced the escape codes with what they represent. Oddly enough there are spaces between the drive "C", the colon ":"and the backslash "\" which I did not put in. They showed up once I replaced the "%20" with " ".

You are right. It was Mobipocket Creator.

Thanks for letting me know it's a zip file.

I didn't have to unzip it though because the Mobipocket Creator did that behind the scenes when I double-clicked on it. It showed the book HTML file and a content file without an extension. I presume it is the XML TOC file the contents of which I posted here.

The local paths are the paths to the files on my machine which Mobipocket Creator requested and then processed.

If by the mess you mean the escape codes, those appeared when I opened the XML file in Word Pad.

I might have identified the problem by looking at the Metadata screen in Mobipocket Creator and comparing it with the same screens for the subsequent two volumes of the book which passed the test. I have no idea how the error message would lead me there, but, here it is. Notice that the author's last name in the metadata for Book One contains an "s" with a diacritical mark, but not so in metadata for the remaining two volumes. The diacritical mark is also in the title of all three volumes and didn't hurt anything, but, is it just a coincidence that the 'AUTHOR': fragment identifier is not defined ..." and the "Author" in the metadata for the book with the problem differs from the other two instances in that the name of the author contains the ever-problematic FOREIGN language character?

METADATA
eBook Title:The Good Soldier Švejk - Book One
Author: Hašek, Jaroslav

METADATA
eBook Title:The Good Soldier Švejk - Book Two
Author: Hasek, Jaroslav

METADATA
eBook Title:The Good Soldier Švejk - Book(s) Three & Four
Author: Hasek, Jaroslav

Unfortunately, I don't have access to the file 'fateful-adventures-of-the-good-soldier-svejk-book-one.epub/tmp_45edabc97a4f32ec211e103c0d3eefa0_S4Rjiy.ch.fix ed.fc.tidied.stylehacked.xfixed_split_028.html' in which the referenced error occurred. It is/was on the server of the epubcheck on-line gizmo at ThreePress Consulting.

So try changing the name of the author to match the others and try again.
