Funny anti heroes

I'm tired of all the highbrow stuff around here.

I'm looking of funny anti heroes.

Examples:
Flashman - A scoundrel so low that you will wonder why you don't just put the book down. But then you have to read just a little more to see what happens to him (and he deserves it too). And just a little bit more to see how meets his end (but he gets away!). And just a little bit more....

I have the full set.

The Great Right Hope – Just as Sir Harry Paget Flashman is the upper crust of the bottom of the barrel, Sid Tillsley is SO MUCH lower. But he may just save mankind.

This one really did make me burst out laughing.

It may be that I just like reading about people better than I am. You know, for motivation.

Any recommendations?

Have you ever read any of Carl Hiaasen's books? Every one has a slightly disfunctional hero, sometimes the same one as in the ex-Governer turned hobo, Skink, sometimes standalone characters for just that novel. Personally I think they're great and certainly not high-brow.

Also worth a look are Christopher Brookmyre's books which feature Jack Parlabane, such as Quite Ugly One Morning and Country of the Blind.

BTW, I also have all the Flashman series and it is probably my favourite series of books ever - I re-read Flashman and the Redskins for about the 10th time just recently.

Which of Hiaasen's books do you sugest? I'm thinking "Skinny Dip".

GOOD GRIEF I just checked out "Skinny Dip" and can't believe the prices.

The other books are much better priced.

Tyrion from George R. R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire". Definitely an anti-hero, definitely funny.

Personally, I thought they were all great, but my favourites were Lucky You, Sick Puppy and Strip Tease (ignore the awful Demi Moore film of that book - it was basically an excuse for some soft-core porn).

Funny Anti-heros? Slippery Jim DiGriz from Harry Harrison's "Stainless Steel Rat" books. Start with The Stainless Steel Rat and continue on from there.

I remember the first page of the first "Stainless Steel Rat" book that I read.

A safe dropped on a policeman (later you find out that it was a robot).

Great books, thanks for reminding me.

A brief synopsis about The Great Right Hope.

There is a dichotomy within this book.
The vampires and the human council take themselves VERY seriously.
Sid Tillsley only takes his cheap cigarettes and beer seriously and says “Reet, no more silly buggers.”

The first 40 pages sets up the story - Vampires no longer kill indiscriminately. There is a human and a vampire council that monitors the "kill".

If the rest of the world found out, there would be a worldwide blood bath. Vampires no longer holding back. Humans hunting them to extinction.

But now and then there are rogue vampires that step outside of the agreement. These are hunted down by both sides.

The rogue vampires blunder into Sid Tillsley. The real fun begins. But this is after page 40, so you have to read that far.

By the way: Mark Jackman donates 50% of ebook and 25% of print royalties to Zoe's place - a hospice for terminally ill kids in Middlesbrough, and Alzheimers Trust UK, split equally between the two.

Read an excerpt - Dangerous Encounter(but for who?)

I've read the entire Flashman series and really liked it.

You might also try Oyster Blues and Tattoo Blues by Michael McClelland. Not available in eBook format (should be) but a real giggle
