More of Today's Cat News. :) Oh Really?
Cats 'exploit' humans by purring
By Victoria Gill Science reporter, BBC News Cat owners may have suspected as much, but it seems our feline friends have found a way to manipulate us humans. Researchers at the University of Sussex have discovered that cats use a "soliciting purr" to overpower their owners and garner attention and food. Unlike regular purring, this sound incorporates a "cry", with a similar frequency to a human baby's. .... http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8147566.stm |

My cat just paws at me (which wouldn't irritate me if he'd keep the claws retracted) when he wants something, or will occasionally meow. Purring just seems to be "yeah, it's all good" from him.
In my 41 years of experience with a wide range of cats, different cats have different communication styles. |

Purring is just one of a repertoire of behaviors my little darlings use to manipulate me. The most pathetic, and effective, ploy is the "silent meow."

My cat seems know I'm just about deaf so she only stares at me. Endlessly if I don't cave and give her a treat.
With my wife, she will meow and meow and meow, jumping in her lap meowing in her face, then jumping down and racing towards the fridge. Cat's purr in the 'Alpha' frequency. (7-14 per second) This alone should be enough to get us to relax and give them treats. Stitchawl |

I just thought Mr M loved me. When it's dinner time he follows to kitchen and sits on the mat until fed. If you leave, he stays and looks sad. It is not until his plate comes out that the noise starts. A kind of miouwpurrr bbblllrooww!

There's a rather amusing book called "The Silent Miaow", by Paul Gallico (most likely long out of print, since it came out in 1964), claiming to be "a manual for kittens, strays, and homeless cats", supposedly written by a cat on how to select, claim, and establish control of appropriate humans.

Should we feed them? Certainly better than the 'Meow Mix' song! Stitchawl |
