Glaspell, Susan: The Morning Is Near Us. v1. 02 Jan 2019

The Morning Is Near Us
BY Susan Glaspell (1876–1948)

This book was first published in 1939. Text is in the public domain in countries where the copyright term is “Life+70” or less.

Lydia Chippman was sent away by her parents at the age of fifteen, to live with a wealthy aunt—why, she does not know, but she knows she wasn’t wanted. She has been living a nomadic existence for nineteen years. Now, under the terms of her father’s will, she returns home with her adopted children (a three-year-old Greek girl and a seven-year-old Mexican boy), to “rescue the family homestead,” and begins questioning family history and learning family secrets.

This book was a Literary Guild selection for 1940.

Susan Keating Glaspell (July 1, 1876 – July 28, 1948) was an American playwright, novelist, journalist and actress. She is known to have composed nine novels, fifteen plays, over fifty short stories, and one biography. Often set in her native Midwest, these semi-autobiographical tales typically explore contemporary social issues, such as gender, ethics, and dissent, while featuring deep, sympathetic characters who make principled stands, and characters in search of life’s meaning.

She is today recognized as a pioneering feminist writer and America’s first important modern female playwright. Her one-act play Trifles (1916) is frequently cited as one of the great works of American theater, as well as an important piece of feminist literature. Alison’s House earned her the 1931 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
