Deeping, Warwick: Laughing House. v1. 26 Aug 2021

The heart-warming story of a house.

“Laughing House” is Sir John Mortimer’s private name for his English mansion, Beech Hill, which was built in the year of the Battle of Waterloo, and has seen many happy times. Now it must endure the rigors of WWII, and Sir John must witness the deterioration of his home when it is requisitioned by the Army for soldiers’ lodging.

But it will take more than a war to thwart the “Laughing House.”

==========
George Warwick Deeping (28 May 1877 – 20 April 1950) was an English novelist and short story writer, whose best-known novel was Sorrell and Son (1925). He was one of the best-selling authors of the 1920s and 1930s, with seven of his novels making the best-seller list.
His early work is dominated by historical romances, but his later novels more usually dealt with modern life, discussing controversial issues, and were critical of many tendencies of twentieth-century civilisation.
