Boyd, Mary Stuart: A Versailles Christmas-Tide, (Illustrated) v1, 23 Dec 2008

A Versailles Christmas-Tide (1901)
by Mary Stuart Boyd ( -1937),
illustrated by A.S. Boyd

In this short travel journal, Mary Stuart Boyd writes her observations and musings about Versailles, where she and her husband resided during the winter of 1900 on account of a sick child. It is quite a candid reporting about Versailles and the French people from the point of view of an Englishwoman. (I shall remain neutral.) It also contains some bits of factual and speculative retelling of French history, a topic for which Mrs. Boyd seems to hold strong opinions.

The book is deliciously and generously illustrated by the author's husband, A.S. Boyd. I find him to be a very talented illustrator, and his 53 illustrations accompanying this book made reading the book quite enjoyable, and made vivid the Versailles of 1900.

Ooops, I noticed I misspelled Versailles in the title metadata. I've corrected this but retained the version number since it was only a small change in the metadata. The eBook content was not touched.

Previous number of downloads = 14.

A side note on the illustrator: Alexander Stuart Boyd (1854-1930) was an illustrator for Punch and The Graphic whose works were frequently displayed at the Royal Academy. Mary Stuart Boyd was born Mary Kirkwood in 1860 and died in 1937.
