It's an ancient device kinda like a text-messeger.

I think it was the Romans who used to have to carry a device on their belts that would let them know someone wanted to talk to them, then they would get out the papyrus and pen a response.

It was basically what caused the downfall of the Roman Empire, cuz their younger soldiers would stop in the middle of a battle to answer pages from their girl friends.

I started Risen, but stopped after the allegation that the townspeople spread small pox amongst natives. I know it's a fiction book, but many people take that slander seriously.

That's frightening, not in a horror type of way, but that animals are put down without enough medication to actually put them to sleep - forever...

Cecil Adams at The Straight Dope, has a discussion about Lord Jeffrey Amherst, commander of British forces in North America during the French and Indian War (1756-'63), who seems to have seriously considered giving Indians infected blankets. No proof that it was actually done, though Lord Amherst considered Native Americans subhumans who ought to be exterminated.

I have read the British used this tactic more often that we realize, early on. And not just against Indians, perhaps. George Washington was convinced that the British were sending smallpox-infected "visitors" out to his troops around Boston, and he had every man in his army variolated (a less-safe form of vaccination). Martha Washington gave at least one "smallpox party," a social form of infecting each other on the extremities, like a hand, which was safer than catching it the normal way, and immunized people permanently. This was in a book about smallpox I have; I have an amateur's interest in epidemiology.
