Goal: 150 books, minimum 5 from Top 100 SF&F list

I'm going to shoot for 150 books in 2012, with the majority being library ebooks. I would like to minimize putting money in the pockets of the Big 6 when I can. There are some series for which I can't get all of the ebooks from the library and there are about 12 books coming out in 2012 in various series that I follow. I'm also setting a goal of minimum 5 of these books from NPR's "Top 100 SF&F books of all time" list. Candidates:

1. Patrick Rothfuss "Name of the Wind" Read 5/5 stars
2. Robin McKinley "Sunshine" Read 3/5 stars
3. Neil Gaiman "Neverwhere" Read 4/5 stars
4. Jasper Fforde "The Eyre Affair" Read 5/5 stars
5. Diana Gabaldon "Outlander" Read 5/5 stars

Series Read in 2012:

1. Weather Warden by Rachel Caine (9 books) 2/5 stars
2. Allie Beckstrom by Devon Monk (8 books) 5/5 stars
3. Chicagoland Vampires by Chloe Neill (6 books) 4/5 stars
4. Morgan Kingsley by Jenna Black (5 books) 3/5 stars
5. Alex Craft by Kalayna Price (3 books) 5/5 stars
6. The Edge by Ilona Andrews (4 books) 4.5/5 stars
7. The Iron Fey by Julie Kagawa (4 books) 4/5 stars
8. Riley Jenson Guardian by Keri Arthur (9 books) 3.5/5 stars
9. Dark Angels by Keri Arthur (3 books) 3/5 stars
10. Wool by Hugh Howey (6 books) 5/5 stars
11. Walker Papers by C.E. Murphy (7 books) 3/5 stars
12. Kitty Norville by Carrie Vaughn (10 books) 3/5 stars
13. Incryptid by Seanan McGuire (1 book) 5/5 stars
14. Kara Gillian by Diana Rowland (4 books) 4/5 stars
15. World of the Lupi by Eileen Wilks (8 books) 4/5 stars
16. Blood of Eden by Julie Kagawa (1 book) 2/5 stars
17. Parasol Protectorate by Gail Carriger (5 books) 5/5 stars
18. Charley Davidson by Darynda Jones (3 books) 4/5 stars
19. Negotiator Trilogy/Old Races by C.E. Murphy (6 books) 4.5/5 stars
20. Darkness Rising by Kelley Armstrong (2 books) 4/5 stars
21. Elder Races by Thea Harrison (4 books) 4/5 stars
22. Age of Steam by Devon Monk (2 books) 5/5 stars
23. Dark Days by Jocelynn Drake (6 books) 3/5 stars

Goal: 100 Books in 2012

I'll have several 2012 goals, which I'm currently contemplating.

Goals:

  • Read 100 books in 2012
  • Read at least one contemporary non-fiction book each month.
  • 20% to 25% of my reading should be from the canon of classic western literature, which means roughly two books per month. Achievable.

Edit: 2012 Challenge Canceled. Shortly after writing these goals, holidays with family and friends interuppted my reading and internet routines. My participation at MR had crossed the line from healthy to addictive, and I used the holiday hiatus to make a cold-turkey break. I stayed completely away from MR for several months. I was reading as voraciously as ever but didn't follow my rules concerning content (non-fiction, western canon).

Next year, perhaps.

Goal: To read enough books that my annual page count exceeds 30,000.

Secondary Goals - Less of a scattergun approach to my reading list, finish any series that I start (within reason) tick off a couple of titles from those 'Best books of the 20th Century' 'Must read before you die' type lists. (Specifically, the lists found here https://apps.facebook.com/booklistch...s&fb_bmpos=1_0 )

Counting books in 2011 discouraged me from beginning any really lengthy volumes. I avoided 'doorstop' fantasy like the plague, which was a shame, as its probably my oldest love. So in 2012, its all about the page count!

Reading list will follow, and be updated throughout the year.

And.......we're off!

1 - 1984 - George Orwell - 298 pages
2 - The Golden Compass - Phillip Pullman - 399 pages
3 - The Subtle Knife - Phillip Pullman - 341 pages
4 - The Amber Spyglass - Phillip Pullman - 548 pages
5 - Kraken - China Mieville - 509 pages (but felt like sooo much more)
6 - A Princess of Mars - Edgar Rice Burroughs - 224 pages
7 - The Stainless Steel Rat - Harry Harrison - 192 pages
8 - The Bourne Identity - Robert Ludlum - 544 pages
9 - On Basilisk Station - David Weber - 458 pages
10 - The Honor of the Queen - David Weber - 422 pages
11 - Royal Flash - George MacDonald Frasier - 304 pages
12 - Fool Moon - Jim Butcher - 342 pages
13 - The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins - 374 pages
14 - Catching Fire - Suzanne Collins - 391 pages

2 months gone and I'm at 5,346 pages, about 500 ahead of this time last year

15 - Mockingjay - Suzanne Collins - 390 pages
16 - Killing Floor - Lee Child - 515 pages

96 - The M16 - Gordon L Rottman - 80 pages
97 - Bicycle Diaries - David Byrne - 297 pages

And as its New Years Eve I probably wont finish anything else, so thats my lot for this year.
97 books (12 less than last year), 33,320 pages (just 560 less than last year), a 343 page average (a 33 page increase). No ReReads!!!
So I read about the same number of pages as last year, just slightly longer books. My secondary goals started well enough but fell by the wayside sometime about May. Oh well, its just a bit of fun anyway

Although an important part of my 2012 goal is to read and clear out my many p-books, I really want to use my Kindle Touch!! So I see a conflict there, but this will be an interesting way to really examine what I have and what I want.

2012 GOAL: 50 books
2012 READ: 102 books
