Troubleshooting X-ray functionality for "War and Peace"

Since this thread is still getting views and there is a lot to wade through, a summary of the results is overdue. As near as I can tell, Amazon was delivering a very broken XRAY file with "War and Peace" as confirmed by other participants in this thread. Communicating this to Amazon proved very difficult, time consuming, and frustrating. After weeks of fruitlessly redownloading the same broken XRAY file, one day a functioning XRAY file was delivered and others had the same experience. So that part of the problem seems to be solved.

However, I soon found some XRAY content errors. PoP had earlier pointed out that the XRAY file is an sqlite database and it turned out that some XRAY content errors are reasonably easy to fix. I have done that for the errors that I know about and the SQL to perform the fix is attached to this message. X-ray is not working correctly for me in "War and Peace: with bonus material from Give War and Peace a Chance" ASIN B00JCDK5ME.

This book is from Simon and Schuster and has been free at Amazon for years. I noticed that it had been updated since I bought it and found that it is now X-ray enabled. I clicked update on my devices and content page then downloaded it, copied it to my Voyage and disabled airplane mode. After the XRAY menu option in the book was no longer grayed out, I tried using it.

I can select XRAY from the menu and get the lists of notable clips, people, terms, and images, but when I try to select one, I get the message: "Sorry, an error occurred"

If I highlight a word in the book that should be in X-ray, at best I get the dictionary, never X-ray.

I tried the same on my Oasis and made sure that indexing was complete before disabling airplane mode to get the X-ray file. I again waited for the XRAY menu option to no longer be grayed out. X-ray failed to work the same as with the Voyage.

Can anyone confirm whether X-ray works on "War and Peace", ASIN B00JCDK5ME ?

I just got it tried it and same thing for me as well

I'm on firmware 5.9.4. and have that book. X-Ray works fine for me, I can select invididual instances without issue.

I don't know how many files X-ray uses, but I'm pretty sure that for this book XRAY.entities.B00JCDK5ME.asc in the sidecar directory is one of them. The file is identical on my Voyage and Oasis 7", so it doesn't seem to be device locked. Since it might not be account locked, it's size is 534528 bytes.

I just bought it yesterday, and my copy that downloaded to my Oasis 2 has x-ray.

Some one should try it on iOS/Android/Fire to see if X-Ray works there. I have big plans to finally read WaP but have my mind set on the P&V translation. I don’t mind spending $10.99 for it when I finally decide to sit down and read it, but I don’t want to set myself back 99 cents now for something else.

Maude translation I think does not preserve all of the original French that Tolstoy used (something like 2% of the text). But otherwise seems a good choice. P&V leaves French intact and has English translation in footnotes, and for the most part their translations are well regarded. I also fantasize about reading it in Russian (of which I have an edition) but my Russian was never great and will need considerable ramping up.

It is unbelievable how many Kindle editions of WaP there are (probably over 60). And the descriptions and reviews are all mixed up.

On android x-ray works. To be specific, on my Galaxy S8+ with Kindle for Android 8.5.0.77 mobile version, x-ray works with some pictures in x-ray even in color.

Maybe not. I have looked a little closer, and probably have the same symptoms. On Both my Oasis 2 and on Android. Notable clips and Pictures work completely, but Terms and People I she the error when opening an entry - description works, but notable clips and all mentions there don't work.

I misread your original post with notable clips wrong - since there is 2 different ones.
