The Nook: What should they have called it?
Okay, I think we're all in agreement here that Nook is a pretty silly name for an e-book reading device. So far, the only likely explanation I've heard is that B&N's guys are Dr. Seuss fans, as this quote from One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish suggests:
Quote:
So come on, MobileReaders: Let's have some good names for a B&N e-book reading device! Serious or silly, I don't really care... it can't possibly be any worse than what they gave us! |

My guess is that its from a common name gracing the banner out front of every other small town used book store across America: The Book Nook
You know the place, it has shelves overflowing with used paperbacks, a smattering of hardbacks, bundle-string packages of National Geographics and Life magazines, narrow aisles from stacks of books that just wouldn't fit on a shelf, and usually a small cat or dog that might belong to the owner. I was goin to enter my suggestion as "The Booker". But then I went through the possible derivations, and it doesn't seem fitting after all. It would mean someone very pleased with this new device could be smeared as "The Happy Booker" and that doesn't seem right. Last edited by pking36330; 10-23-2009 at 09:09 AM. |

I heard a rumor that they were going to call it a "Liseuse", but didn't think anyone would get the joke.

That makes me think further: As TARDIS is an acronym (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space--geeky almost-a-brit Steve), maybe there's a good acronym for the B&N dingus. Thoughts?

"Not a bOOK"?
"New bOOK"? "aNdroid-based bOOK reader"? I always thought it was some sort of mix-up between "Android" (the platform) and "Book". Looking at the logo the "n" of "nook" is the same as used in the android logo. |

Libren. That would have been a good name. Recognizable in many languages as sounding like "books" or "library." Also sounds like "free" or "liberating."
Hmm... maybe I'll use that in my next novel... |
