I agree ACeP is not going to be a tablet display any time soon, and probably not even for an eReader screen. And maybe it never will be good for those applications. For signage (for static images) it seems good enough and offers many advantages over other electronic display tech. But if the ideal display is paper with color ink, this is perhaps the closest attempt so far. Eventually advances in nanotechnology may allow production of something better, performant, and cost effective (something like Mirasol gen 2 perhaps). From what I’ve seen of the ‘hybrid’ approaches to reflective color (TFT+bistable), I am doubtful they will ever appear in consumer products (including educational applications). They just don’t look good to me, for reading or watching video or anything else. Perhaps they can get traction for construction, law enforcement, recreation, and military applications where readability outdoors, ruggedness and low power consumption outweigh desire or need for accurate color, performance, and affordability. I am interested in how a B&W CLEARink display compares to EInk’s. Is there any such information? Last edited by tomsem; 06-08-2018 at 01:41 PM. |

Are those claimed numbers for the video display in this thread? Because while the reflectance and contrast numbers sound impressive, it appears the viewing angle is limited for achieving those levels. It looks more like a specular sort of reflectance, not a matte, wide-angle viewing like paper (or E-ink). |

I'm eagerly awaiting the first products. I suspect I'll need to wait at least another year or two.

Maybe, but:
It was a strategy that CLEARink waited about a year to reveal the name of the investor lenovo. Nine month ago they said in the second quarter they will show a first product for the market. Around the same time I was in contact with them and they said, that they will reveal the name of the investor later. If they needed one or two years more they would have waited to reveal the name. I'm going to say vaporware or won't live up to the hype until proven otherwise, nothing against clearink or anything, just my pessimistic nature and the way this sort of thing tends to be. I'm rooting for my prediction to be false, though, a viable low-power color screen that's usable in ereaders would be great.

Latest news:
Fremont and Shanghai, February 26, 2019 – Tianma, the leader in electronic display manufacturing, and CLEARink Displays, the leader in next generation ePaper, announced today that the companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a partnership framework for developing CLEARink’s patented ePaper 2.0 displays. Under the partnership framework, Tianma will develop TFT backplane and module assemblies for CLEARink’s next generation ePaper displays for tablets and other applications. Tianma has been a manufacturing and technology leader in small to medium size displays for over three decades. Tianma’s well-combined fablines and rich operational experience are well adapted to guarantee high quality supply of CLEARink’s ePaper 2.0 displays for various applications ranging from tablets to IoT (Internet of Things). CLEARink’s ePaper 2.0 technology has been trial manufactured and tested and the company will soon ship sample kits to select customers to commence the next phase of design. CLEARink’s ePaper 2.0 technology brings color and video to applications that require low power and sunlight readability. “We have market demand and multiple customer commitments for our ePaper 2.0 displays.” said Frank Christiaens, CEO & Chairman, CLEARink Displays. “Our partnership with industry leader Tianma will accelerate our product and process development and allow us to serve customers in various geographies.” Source: https://www.businesswire.com/news/ho...a-Announce-MoU |

Here are the latest specs achieved on the demos built in the factory:
9.7” Diagonal size 227 DPI !!! 1:16 CR for color; 1:20 CR for Monochrome 24-30 frames/second video Color gamut 19% of NTSC 4096 Colors !!! Drive voltage: 3V; Hold Voltage : 1V !!! Question from an industry colleague: Can you describe the power savings achievable with your e-paper 2.0 technology? Is it depending on content? Answer: It is indeed. Our calculations using existing semiconductors (we are designing our own which will lower the power even more) in a 9.7” tablet size display shows that we can get about 20 days of life when we run full video for 5 hours per day and we can get almost 30 days of use when we are using mostly static content, again assuming 5 hours/day of usage (unlike the 30 mins/day use touted on some devices) Last edited by Matilo; 02-26-2019 at 01:46 PM. |

Is 1:16 contrast ratio the same thing as 16:1?
Eink Carta has a 15:1 contrast ratio, LCDs about 1000:1 etc. Is Clearink just inversing the numbers or is their contrast that bad?(or are they using some different ratio?) |

Clearly they are the same. They are the ratio of black to white reflectance when you give it black:white or white:black.
Note that it's 16:1 for colour displays. Enormously better than the Eink Triton which has a contrast ratio of 12:1 at best. And 20:1 for greyscale is a lot better than EInk Carta, which is 15:1. |
