USB Power Adapter

Hi all,
Is there a correct way to "eject" Kobo from a USB Power Adapter?
I bought one because it annoys me having my laptop running for three hours just to charge my Kobo.

Nope. Just yank it. The power adapter does not open the filesystems on the kobo so there's no risk of damage.

700mAH is what Kobo recommends for charging. If you provide a little less, it will take a little longer to charge.

I will obtain an answer direct from Kobo on whether or not the use of a 1AH charger violates their Kobo warranty. I can certainly interpret their warranty dated 04/2010 to include an unauthorized charger as an unauthorized "accessories or peripherals'"

Just want to provide the best info for the group ... after all, each Kobo has "700mAH" printed on it for a charger's current. Something more than that taxes the regulation circuitry built into the device.

I can't really tell you to use an 'unauthorized' charger. But I can say that we have been using blackberry chargers at the office @ 1000 mAH for a while and have not seen any negative effects.

Cheers Sameer

I have been using my HP IPAQ PDA (rated at 1000mA) charger to charge my Kobo and all is good so far.

It took 3 hours to charge to capacity from just under 1/3 full.

So there's the word from Kobo! Personally, I can "afford" the extra hour or so a 700mAH charger *might* take versus my 1000mAH chargers. But if one is in a hurry ...

Speaking of chargers, who has a 12VDC car cord charger that they really like? I am using Belkin's Dual Auto Charger F8Z280 - with its dual USB jacks to charge/power up to two devices at once.

But both Belkin and Kensington(?) have really smaller - darned-near flush to your dash - chargers available now for cigarette lighter receptacles. OOOPS, I mean "for power ports" in cars.

And I just saw a line of chargers at my local Verizon store - traditional-looking 12VDC car chargers, but with an added USB jack on the top of the body - for a second unit.

That's not quite how electronics work clint. The kobo draws 700mA @ 5V. The voltage must always be exact (all USB is 5V so no worries there). If you use a charger capable of delivering 1000mA (or more) it doesn't matter as the kobo will still only draw 700mA. Now using a 500mA charger may be problematic as depending on its design, the kobo may exceed the charger's rating causing it to fail.

Chargers for electronics should always be able to deliver the rated device current or higher.

But what dissipates the additional amperage? The charger unit, or the regulation circuitry in the device? Or, to paraphrase an old US TV commercial, "Where's the heat?"

There shouldn't be any additional amperage. If things work as they should, the power supply just runs below its rated amperage capacity, in the same way you can run a night light pulling a few mA on a 10 A mains circuit.

There's nothing to dissipate... Amperage is like a capacity for work, if the the job is easy, there's no sweat. If the job is too hard, it just takes longer, or burns out the worker.

Just like all the different light bulbs you could screw into a light socket - 25w or 150w, the lighting circuit doesn't care, until you overload it and blow the fuse (or circuit breaker), the voltage stays the same at 110v (in North America)

Think of the charger amperage rating as a fuse rating.

Answered few times, just to repeat.
There is nothing bad to use higher ampepage in this case. It is way
better than underrated charger. So, 1000 works fine, since kobo
takes 700 and it works as 700 charger. If it is 500, it works as 500
and that is not good.
Thermal dissipation is something to watch out. If heats, it is lower
amperage charger. Charger of 1000 does no heat at all on kobo.
