Kindle Reader, Amazon Refurbished

Over the years I think that I have bought three so called refurbished Kindle readers from Amazon. All have been in new condition without even a scratch and they carry the full Amazon warranty. Packaging is different than regular new Kindle reader packaging.

The latest bought is a top end current Kindle Paperwhite, 32 GB with WiFi and cellular connectivity. No advertising. List is $250. Sale price was $210 while the refurbished unit was $160, saving $50 to $90. You have to watch things though as sometimes on the less expensive reader versions, when on sale, the sale price is lower than the refurbished unit price. This was true during the recent sale for the latest Kindle Basic and basic Kindle PW. Also no separate listing page on this refurbished unit, just a small listing on the right side order section of the WiFi and cellular listing version, which is a separate listing page from the WiFi only version.

Often "refurbished" can simply mean anything between a repackaged return to "the box was tampered with". I got a half price colour laser MFP that obviously never been unpacked as "refurbished".

I suppose some Amazon items really are "refurbished" but it does often seem to simply mean returned to stock.

The "Special Offers" vs regular Kindle pricing and unclear spec of the "Basic" kindle and limitations of the "Kids Editions" are all misleading to the unwary. Self Publishing: As indeed is the KDP Select vs KDP and Amazon POD paperbacks vs third party paperbacks. Also deceptive default "Kindle Unlimited" or "Kindle Prime" pricing and the normal price almost hidden.
Dark Arts GUI on the Check out with a big button for Sign Up to subscription and a tiny text link to continue Check-out.

Also KFX vs AZW downloads if you don't select "Download via PC".

Buyer Beware!

Also scams on the reviews. Third party sellers seem less controlled than on eBay.

Certainly there are bargains to be had on Amazon.

Does amazon still have the web site where all of their returned stuff was listed for sale?

Quoth:

I agree. Amazon does a lousy job of controlling their independent vendors, particularly some of the ones from the orient. Many Lithium ion batteries list impossible capacities and most magnifiers list greatly exaggerated magnifications. Same for claimed light output of off brand LED flashlights and LED light bulbs. However Ebay sellers in these categories are even worse including many sellers of USB power packs which list impossible capacities.
