But a presence is watching from behind the endless rainstorm, something that wants revenge... and has not come alone.

The Best Horror of the Year: 1. Edited by Ellen Datlow. From Night Shade Books. 2009. Other volumes in the series currently $7.99.

Quote:
An Air Force Loadmaster is menaced by strange sounds within his cargo; a man is asked to track down a childhood friend... who died years earlier; doomed pioneers forge a path westward as a young mother discovers her true nature; an alcoholic strikes a dangerous bargain with a gregarious stranger; urban explorers delve into a ruined book depository, finding more than they anticipated; residents of a rural Wisconsin town defend against a legendary monster; a woman wracked by survivor's guilt is haunted by the ghosts of a tragic crash; a detective strives to solve the mystery of a dismembered girl; an orphan returns to a wicked witch's candy house; a group of smugglers find themselves buried to the necks in sand; an unanticipated guest brings doom to a high-class party; a teacher attempts to lead his students to safety as the world comes to an end around them...

What frightens us, what unnerves us? What causes that delicious shiver of fear to travel the lengths of our spines? It seems the answer changes every year. Every year the bar is raised; the screw is tightened. Ellen Datlow knows what scares us; the twenty-one stories and poems included in this anthology were chosen from magazines, webzines, anthologies, literary journals, and single author collections to represent the best horror of the year.

Legendary editor Ellen Datlow (Poe: New Tales Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe), winner of multiple Hugo, Bram Stoker, and World Fantasy awards, joins Night Shade Books in presenting The Best Horror of the Year, Volume One.

It looks a bit like the $0.99 price is permanent though. It doesn't look like it's temporarily reduced from what I can tell. Of course, I could be wrong and it could be ten times the price tomorrow.

Yeah, it could be, but it just came up in my recommendations so I decided to post it. I don't know how long it's been that price.

ETA: I've learned by experience to grab something when it's a good price. Even though that has backfired on me when something later comes up free, it often goes up in price and I'm cussing out Amazon or whomever (and myself). LOL

Thanks, NightBird and Permuted Press, that was one of the better quality Cthulhu Mythos freebie recommendations of late. Generally, there's too much poor Mythos fiction around these days, even from commercial publishers. It's good to see something free that earns its keep.

Great! I'm moving that to the top of my TBR list.

The Sorrows by Jonathan Franz is free from Samhain at their website.

Quote:
Something is trapped in the castle, and it wants to feed!

The Sorrows, an island off the coast of northern California, and its castle have been uninhabited since a series of gruesome, unexplained murders in 1925. But its owner needs money, so he allows film composers Ben and Eddie and a couple of their female friends to stay a month in Castle Blackwood. Eddie is certain an eerie and reportedly haunted castle is just the setting Ben needs to find musical inspiration for a horror film.

But what they find is more horrific than any movie. For something is waiting for them in the castle. A being, once worshipped, now imprisoned, has been trapped for nearly a century. And he’s ready to feed.

Cuckoo by Richard Wright is $.99. I'm not sure if this is a permanent reduction or not, but I think it was more than this before. It was originally published by small press, Hard Shell Word Factory, in 1999. I read it then and it is still one of my favorites. Really creepy with lots of twists.

Quote:
Greg Summers knows the answers to the questions. Until one day he returns home to discover that his wife no longer recognises him; that his wife is married to another man called Greg Summers.

Perhaps it is an elaborate hoax, yet that wouldn’t explain the vivid flashbacks to his childhood, or the violent eruptions of blood that accompany them. Nor does it explain the stray memories that seem to belong to an entirely separate man called Richard Jameson.

One of these men is a lie, and neither wishes it to be he. On the run from a creature that cannot exist, his comfortable truths shattered, Greg finds his whole knowledge of the world questionable. If he does not know himself, what can he trust himself to know?

Greg Summers and Richard Jameson are about to discover that the fight to survive is all in the mind...

Free from DarkFuse: Manhattan Grimoire by Sandy DeLuca.

Quote:
A crippling blizzard, grisly discoveries in an old church in Harlem, a small apartment building cut off by the mounting storm, its tenants trapped with a vicious killer that may or may not be human, and an unholy manuscript stolen from a dead sorcerer that could very well hold the secrets to opening the gates of Hell.

MANHATTAN GRIMOIRE, the terrifying new novel by Sandy DeLuca

Gina has seen strange visions since childhood. Her mother was considered insane for having the same affliction, and before her disappearance, Gina's sister Allie was obsessed with black magic and "saw" things too. It eventually led her to a depraved conjurer known as Mojo DeCanne, a man who possessed a book of demonic spells Allie stole and hid in Gina's apartment in the days before she vanished. Now, as Manhattan braces for the worst snowstorm in decades, and Gina's visions become worse, blurring the lines between nightmare and reality, Mojo DeCanne has come looking for what is his. In order to solve the mystery of her sister's disappearance and the meaning behind her own shattered life, Gina must first survive the night and somehow stop an unimaginable evil from fulfilling its horrific destiny. Darkness falls on Manhattan. The blizzard grows worse. And the lights go out.
