Lightbulb Easy URL transfer

I found out a way to transfer URLs easily. Have you ever wanted to post a URL on something like a forum or your e-mail but the URL was to long to remember? You can just copy and paste it, right? Not on Kindle. I've found a way for you to easily remember any long URL that you are on and post it somewhere even if you are using your Kindle. What you do is press "Menu" and go to "Enter URL". Now move the 5-way controller to the left. The cursor should be behind the "http". You should now see something like "|http://youngprofessor.wordpress.com/2010/16/11/wgm100ott/#respond" with the "|" representing the Kindle's cursor. Now type in "http://tinyurl.com/create.php?url=". You should now see "http://tinyurl.com/create.php?url=http://youngprofessor.wordpress.com/2010/06/11/wgm100ott/#respond". Press "Enter" and wait for the page to load. You should be redirected to a site that tells you that "http://tinyurl.com/375xj3k" is the shortened version of the long URL. Now isn't that so much easier to remember?

PM me if you want to hear a cool trick with TinyURL that'll surprise your friends!

Thanks for this! I was really stumped as to how to send links to Instapaper FROM my Kindle, but I'm now using your idea as follows:

1) When you're on a page you want to add to Instapaper, using the "Enter URL" option on your Kindle, type in at the beginning of the address "tinyurl.com/create.php?url=" (you don't actually have to type in the http:// and the rest is short enough to memorize so you can do it quickly) and press "Enter" to take you to the tinyurl.com URL-shortening page.

2) Assign each page a name following some system you make up using VERY SHORT names that you can remember (such as "jan0120111" for the first file you rename on Jan 1, 2011). You might want to put a random letter in there somewhere to make it more likely no one else will be using your filenames!

3) Go to your email account on your Kindle, in which you've already set up a contact for the long, weird email address of your Instapaper account.

4) Send an email to that address, in the body of which you've typed the shortened name you've just assigned to the page you wanted to send.

The page will be added to Instapaper, and you can adjust your settings so new pages will be emailed to you every day. It's hardly a streamlined, one-click solution, but it does work and doesn't take too long.

X.co shortens the urls even further, only four characters + 'x.co' itself.

Clarification:
"x.co/1234" where "1234" is replaced by your four characters assigned at "x.co".

Hmm... 4 letters only? Assuming that they only use A-Z,a-z, and 0-9, that would only allow the service to be used for 62^4 = 14,776,336 URLs. Not an awful lot.

But I guess they will switch to 5 letters once they run out of identifiers

Considering that x.co/abc and x.co/12 and x.co/x all take you to different places, it appears that they have been adding an extra character ever since they ran out of single-character identifiers. So, taking the evidence that I provided, your guess is probably an accurate assumption.

So to use it you go to the beginning of the displayed url (e.g. facebook.com) and type

x.co?url=facebook.com
