kobo reader stops calibre.exe

Just installed Calibre 0.8.9 on windows 7 Home Premium (32 bit) sp 1. Told the install wizard to configure calibre for a Kobo reader. The Kobo eReader is the wifi model. It's running firmware 1.9. whether I start Calibre and plugin the Kobo or vice versa, I always get the message "calibre.exe has stopped working". From the debug info below, what does 'try rebooting" mean? The drive is visible in windows and is browse-able. I can see the files on the Kobo device. Any suggestions on how to fix the device plugin?

Go to preferences->plugins and disable the pdf metadata reader plugin

Thanks, that fixed it. What am I missing if I can't read pdf metadata?

Not an awful lot, most PDF files have incorrect internal metadata anyway. There is some PDF file on you kobo causing the crash, if you care enough you can try to locate it and remove it, that will allow you to restore pdf metadata reading.
