Warning - pirate Doc Savages on Amazon

Lest we get into another 1984 deletion squabble, the Laurence Donovan Doc Savages are not authorized by Conde Nast, and are not PD in the US. I have not bought any of them, but I suspect they are copies from PG Australia, where they are public domain.

They're badly formatted, too. (Not that it would be okay if they were well-formatted.). Looks like they're contesting the copyright in the UK... Wonder how that works?

It'd be okay depending on the jurisdiction. Lawrence Donovan died in 1950, so in the year-of-death + 50 countries (like Canada & Australia), the ones he wrote solo went PD in 2001. (the ones by creator and original author Lester Dent entered the public domain in '03; not sure of the other early authors - obviously the one by Philip Jose Farmer (d. 2009) and the ones by Will Murray (still alive) will be in copyright for a lot longer, even here).

Heck, if someone cared enough and had the time on their hands, Mobileread (working under Canadian rules) could host at least 90% of the Doc Savage catalog, maybe more.

cool! I used to love these books - I just downloaded the first one, to see whether it has held up after all these years (I used to love the Barssom books, but re-reading them after the movie came out, found that I couldn't get into them)

As much as I used to enjoy reading Doc Savage as a kid, I find that I have to put myself in a proper frame of mind to read them now. Let's face it, the characters and dialog were so well-established over 181 books that they become predictable to a fault.

The later books (from the original series) become much more readable, then, as they begin to break that mold.

Every now and then I am reminded that I haven't read any of Will Murray's new books, and I should give them a try.

I love the Doc Savage books. Missed them in my youth, but am enjoying them now. Yes, there predictable, pulpy, and overblown but so much fun.
