Are Yard Gnomes under attack in the suburbs?

Back in my college days, in the '70s, there was a rash of pink flamingo lawn ornaments being stolen in night-time raids. The perpetrator was nicknamed the "Flamingo Bandit". (He was a friend of mine.)

In the long run, it seems the popularity of the pink flamingo waned and was replaced by the gnome.

It's just that those things that might or might not be under attack would be garden gnomes in the UK - a yard is not usually a place you'll fined gnomes, (unless they have retreated there to escape attack I suppose).

We do our usual linguistic compromise in Australia - we have back yards and front yards but overall we have a garden (makes perfect sense doesn't it?).
And yes - garden gnomes are always targets especially around this time of year when the spirit (or should that be "spirits"?) of Christmas affect some people badly as they stagger home from a party.

Filthy stinking yard gnomes! I loathe them. I chew them up and spit them out whenever I see them. This country is being overrun by the buggers and it was questionable to have granted them any rights in the first place. We should remove them all from our sight - now!

We leave them yard gnomes alone in these parts.
They don't like it if you go poking around in their business.
Weren't so bad in the beginning.
Only a few folks had them.
Then they started turning up everywhere.
Soon, all the cats and them little yappy dogs started vanishing.
And there's them gnomes, standing around them little tiny graves, looking innocent.
Me, I can't wait until Halloween.
Figure the little bastards will thin out the trick or treaters real nice..
Good riddance, I say.
I recommend that if you all got yard gnomes, you stay on their good side.
They like beer.
Always leave them a keg in your yard.
Do that, they keep everything nice and green.
Word to the wise.

My sister once had a garden gnome. She dragged it everywhere, from house-to-house when we lived at home (we were RAAF-brats) and then every other house she lived in. It lorded it over every garden, like some landed gnometry measuring every peasant beneath him. Until one Christmas when we were all around, and present when the first blow in the workers' uprising was struck:

There's a book by Sharyn McCrumb "The Windsor Knot", the one where Elizabeth and Cameron are planning the wedding so she can go meet the Queen, where they start getting postcards signed "Your Garden Gnome" from all over the globe. According to Wikipedia, it's a pretty popular trick (I guess if you have global friends it's a lot easier to pull off?)
Finally they end up with this huge heavy package at the wedding reception containing...yep, the garden gnome!
