In this second post, are the fonts WITHOUT semi-bold varieties that I tested. Some, like Volk, and NimbusMod, while not technically semibold, are, for all intents and purposes.

New Screenshots posted 6/27.
FedraSerifA is probably a bit better suited to e-reading than FedraSerifB, as it has slightly less contrast (between thin strokes and dark strokes), with larger x height and smaller ascenders/descenders. It's a similar slab serif font to Caecilia. The medium is a bit bolder. Rockwell is another font very similar to Caecilia. I think people get caught up in how "pretty" a font, when, in reality, much more important (unless you are printing high resolution images), is how readable, and how much/little the font contributes to screen fatigue. I believe that Caecilia, FedraSerifA and Rockwell are the best options right now, for e-reading. I like LexiaDaMa as well but there is no medium font weight and the regular weight is a bit less bold that I like. Fontin is a nice font, but, again, for purposes of ereading it is too high in contrast (not a good thing...counter-intuitive...as from what little I understand, the contrast, as it pertains to fonts, is the difference in thickness between the thicker and thinner strokes on a letter...look at a lower case "r" for example), and isn't quite thick/bold/chunky enough to make it easy to read without fatigue, for long periods, especially at smaller sizes. The screenshot with the file name Vollkorn-Regular, it looks like slab serif? Vollkorn has a more 'classic' serif appearance.

Not sure what to tell you. That's Vollkorn.
Edited to add. I just checked and it is the same font. Vollkorn. You sure you aren't thinking of another font? Can anyone else (more familiar with the font) confirm? Last edited by Japes; 06-24-2011 at 10:38 PM. |

To be honest, your Vollkorn screenshot looks just like your screenshot for CaeciliaLTStd-Bold. This is my screenshot of Vollkorn:

Not sure what to say. Your screen shot and mine look pretty much the same.

You were right. I screwed up. Re-uploading the Vollkorn one now.

Wow. I thought this thread would get much more activity than it has gotten.

LexiaDaMa & Cecillia look like I'm reading a Kindle and I never liked the font Amazon chose.
Droid is also a pretty awful font. I know it's free. But blah! I do happen to like Charis SIL. Joanna has a way way too large line height. I know it can be overridden in CSS. But it's still not a good font to read with. Cantoni and any other sans-serif font have to go. They don't work as a body font. MinionPro is pretty good. The rest are just so-so. |
