Some people have gotten email from Amazon about a forthcoming update (5.16.6):

It basically says that sometime in the future there will be a new Kindle firmware release with unspecified changes and a version number higher than the last one.

Has Amazon ever sent a pre-release email before? In all my years of using one they just send an email after it's released, or nothing at all.

I have gotten emails about Scribe updates, BTBH I cannot remember if it was before or after the fact. But this applies to Kindles in general (the ones still getting updates, that is).

FWIW, as of right now, it's not available to sideload form the .fr Kindle CS page.

(And, yeah, I got the mail a few days ago, in French, despite none of my devices being setup in that language. Most of 'em *are* registered on .fr, though).

Finally after nearly 17 years you can set the date & time. Big issue on older 3G only Kindles. Screen-shots used to go in exposed partition root, assuming you figured how to do them!

The new settings menus are so much better than the old. This update is definitely worth it for that alone.

It looks like the browser is faster-- I'm glad they're continuing to improve in that area, especially since they don't have newspapers anymore in the Kindle store-- It's nice to get news that you don't have to "force" through Calibre.

On the Scribe -- The lasso tool also includes a delete function, which is nice to have.

I noticed in the new settings menu that there is now a choice for software updates. When clicked it says "Your Kindle is up to date - You have the latest software (version 5.16.6)."

I wonder if that means we can now check for updates and download them on demand without having to go the the Kindle E-Reader Software Updates web page.

They also added a new entry for Household Sharing on the settings menu from the Home/Library.

With ability to set system time directly, I assume Kindle is not assuming GMT time.

For example, to overwrite a Scribe Notebook (restore some previous version or replace with a copy of another notebook), I have had to set modify date so it is in future of GMT time to get it to sync. Hopefully that's not necessary any longer.

I think this time offset was also responsible for 'disappearing covers' of side-loaded-by-calibre content (but was never able to reproduce this).

I'll check the notebook behavior.

Had to reboot a second time for the new settings UI to take hold, but so far, I like it!
