Again, is the filename.kepub or filename.kepub.epub? The extension must be the double barrelled .kepub.epub to use the Kobo renderer or .epub to use the RMSDK renderer. A simple .kepub will not be recognized.

In the configuration for the KoboTouch driver in calibre 8.x, on the second tab, try removing the checkmark from the Use Kobo viewer for EPUB books to disable sending kepub.epub and see if the books show. Also what is the Save template on the first tab of the configuration dialog?

Did you try copying the tester folder in the .zip file I attached to a previous message to the root of your Kobo's internal storage? Not through calibre but simply a file copy.

OK David. I managed to fix it. It was a Kobo problem not Calibre. I deleted the KoboReader.sqlite folder (suggested by AI) and my Kobo did some kind of reset without losing all my books. Just had to change the fonts. It's now importing books correctly. Thank you very much anyway for all your suggestions.

Unless backed up with Kobo Utilities, you've also lost all bookmarks on sideloaded books.

The KoboUtilities plugin doesn't report any issues with the database. I restarted the device after new imports. I am not certain which Importing Books page you mean. The screen and lists refresh, but no particular notification shows up.

The only solution so far I figured out last night, seems to be to logout of the (mandatory) kobo account. This forced the reader to re-import the database. Unfortunately, this also resets reading statistics (progress is lost, and all books are marked as unread including the ones I already finished). And I have to go through the setup process and adjust the settings every time. So not a very satisfactory long-term solution.

It sounds like the same problem I have since a few weeks. I was still on on Calibe 7.xx then. The books are transferred to the device, but not showing up on the reader in the book lists.

When you send books to the Kobo and then safely eject, a black screen which says Importing content with a progress bar (starts at and end at 94%) should show up after a delay which is when your Kobo is creating the database entries for new books and importing a limited set of information from the books to the database.

This is typical of database corruption on the kobo.

The easiest way to cause database corruption is to add a bunch of books to the device over USB and then unplug the USB without ejecting. But that's not the only way.

There are bugs in the kobo firmware that occasionally cause the kobo filesystem to be shared between the USB and things running on the kobo itself. When this happens, database and possibly filesystem corruption are possible.

Different versions of the firmware, especially older ones, are worse at this. The problem persists in newer firmware, but it is getting harder and harder to reproduce this issue as the bugs get fixed.

Some people say that exiting the book and going to the home screen fixes this (or maybe makes it less likely). The only proven way so far to totally prevent the issue is to reboot the device before connecting to USB. I use the NickelMenu kobo patch extension to add a menu entry that turns off wifi and reboots my device, which makes this really easy.

If Kobo Utilities says the database is not corrupt yet your eBooks are not importing, try a reboot and see how that goes.

I have had a similar problem since I installed version 8.0 of Calibre. After version 8.xx, books could be transferred and appeared in both the device section of Calibre and on my Kobo. The only problem was that when attempting to open a book in the device section of Calibre, I received the following message:

calibre, version 8.2.1
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device

stat: path should be string, bytes, os.PathLike or integer, not BufferedReader

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "calibre\gui2\device.py", line 111, in run
File "calibre\gui2\device.py", line 713, in _view_book
File "calibre\devices\kobo\driver.py", line 765, in get_file
File "shutil.py", line 235, in copyfile
File "shutil.py", line 212, in _samefile
File "genericpath.py", line 100, in samefile
TypeError: stat: path should be string, bytes, os.PathLike or integer, not BufferedReader

The solution was to do what DNSB suggested in post #3226 above. I removed the checkmark from the "Use Kobo viewer for EPUB books" in the KoboTouch driver and this disabled the sending of keypub.epub. Calibre now just sends epubs to the device section of Calibre and to my Kobo so that I can now open the books in the device section as well as in Kobo.

When you send books to your Kobo, are you have author directories created? If so, that could be the problem. Plig in your Kobo tot he USB. Create a directory call books. Then remove the author directories from the template in Kobo Touch. replace it with books. It could be maybe an author name is using an extended character and causing the problem.

As far as I can tell, calibre still sanitizes the filenames to keep that from being an issue.

Not mention that you can't use the KTE driver on calibre 8.0+.

The easiest way is to install KoboUtilities and use its menu option 'Configure Driver'. But you can also go Settings > Plugins > Search 'KoboTouch' (disable the 'only user installed' check) > Customize Plugin.
