Add Calibre to the Mac Store?

Kovid, have you thought about adding Calibre to the Mac Store? It would make installing and updating much more convenient for OSX users. If you've discussed this before, I haven't seen it. I tried a search and found nothing.

Who else would like to see Calibre on the Mac Store?

calibre cannot be in the Mac Store due to not meeting a number of their requirements. To name a few that might be issues:
  • Apps that are "beta".
  • Apps must be packaged and submitted using Apple's packaging technologies included in Xcode - no third party installers allowed.
  • Apps must comply with all terms and conditions explained in the Apple Macintosh Human Interface Guidelines.
  • Apps that do not use system provided items, such as buttons and icons, correctly and as described in the Apple Macintosh Human Interface Guidelines will be rejected.

Not to mention that Apple's app store does not allow for compliance with the GPL (the license calibre is distributed under). GPL apps (VLC) have been removed from the iOS store recently due to this.

Aside from the GPL, seems like adhering to the rest of those guidelines would be an improvement

Kovid develops calibre on Linux. The majority of users are Windows users. While conforming to the Apple HIG would look good on OS X it won't fit in very well with the majority of systems people use. OS X support is mostly an artifact of good coding and using platform agnostic tools.

Yes, there's a good idea: completely change the paradigm and usability of calibre for 97% of users, in order to satisfy the 3% that use OS x.

Such a typical apple mentality.

I, for one, hope he never does that.

I have no plans to make calibre available via the App store.

Ouch. I doubt "Steve Jobs" realized that it would take so many changes for Calibre to comply with Mac store requirements, since it already works so well on Macs.

N.B. - I'm a Mac (and Linux) user, though I've never used the Mac store for software and had no idea what the requirements were prior to reading user_none's comment.
