Mobipocket Reader Desktop 6.2 Beta

The Mobipocket Reader Desktop 6.2 Beta build 614 includes the following:
Quote:
* iRex iLiad & iRex Digital Reader, Bookeen Cybook Gen3 , BeBook and HanLin eReader V3 eInk devices support
I never used Windows Mobipocket Reader to manage MOBI ebooks for the iLiad, because it puts all ebooks on a single directory, but this beta build is supposed to also work with the DR1000S. I wonder where it puts dictionaries and whether they then work on the DR1000S?

The BeBook and HanLin eReader V3 support is also new, and was mentioned in Hanlin's recent announcement of its MOBI reader.

What does it mean that it support ebook device? Does it mean that the desktop reader can sync mobi book with ebook device?

It means two things, a) that Windows MobiPocket Reader will forward the device's PID to some MOBI bookstores and automatically handle any re-downloads needed for a new device and b) that ebooks will be synced to the device if it is plugged in via USB. Unfortunately, MobiPocket has no concept of subdirectories so all ebooks go into a single directory (on the PC and on the device).

I tried it this afternoon. Works pretty nicely, recognizes the reader without a problem, the syncing works as expected, even for newsfeeds.

However, once again, the formatting is nearly inexistent: some bold, and at least inline images, but not much beyond that. No margins, centering doesn't work reliably... This was tested using some of the free sample books from Mobipocket.com.

The only Zoom option is Full Screen, but at least you can change the font size (still only the default Sans-Serif) The books are obviously "formatted" for a much smaller and simpler device, for instance the covers are postage-stamp size on the DR1000. The books you can purchase for the Sony reader from their own ebookstore are much better formatted for the designated device.

It's there, but very much a work in progress, like all the other formats except PDF perhaps.

Older MOBI ebooks do have small embedded images, but recent ones are usually better (in part because they are following the Kindle version). However, it is still best to buy MS Reader (LIT) ebooks and convert them to MOBI.

The DR1000 Mobipocket reader was supposed to be much better than that on the iLiad, but from your description it is essentially unchanged. Can you at least view the cover page? For example, HarryT's Dickens, Charles: A Tale of Two Cities is in the recent MOBI format which has a separate cover image (attached from Windows MobiPocket Reader) that isn't in-lined in the HTML. It isn't viewable at all on the iLiad.
