Rooted
Who sees the key word 'rooted' in discussions on these forums and thinks firstly of the Australian English colloquial definition?

And what is the Australian colloquial definition?
I still link the word root/rooted with sports. |

Quote:
The sports connection is in the fourth use of the word "root" in the Merriam-Webster. As I first learned English by reading comics and sports magazines, I thought it was standard English. Definition of ROOT intransitive verb 1: to noisily applaud or encourage a contestant or team : cheer 2: to wish the success of or lend support to someone or something |

Root: to cheer for a sports team -- perhaps an Americanism? I've known it all my life, but haven't heard it much in Canada.
It makes as much sense as the Australian definition. |

There is a suburb named "Rooty Hill" here in Sydney.
You could imagine the double entendre jokes. "Root, root, root for Rooty Hill" is popular |

Interesting concept but no, afraid not.
"Rooting for Australia" has a much more interesting nationalistic tone to it though.. And things can be rooted too. (Makes me think of many Android warranties when I read it in the forums.) |

Ah, the Australian definition that my wife and I just learned a week ago?
Actually, as the result of a joke I'd heard several years ago I had a hunch as to that particular meaning. Also, what ye Ozzies call a bum bag was originally called a fanny pack here in the States. I wonder how many American tourists spent their trips being giggled at back in the '90s. So now my question is, what do Linux users call the person who logs in on the superuser account in Australia? |
