JCNIP M218A e-book device coming this month

Sometimes we feel like a kid in a candy store when there's a new e-book reader hitting the market. Thanks to member each for the heads-up:

Got some good news from a Chinese e-book forum: JCNIP will release a new e-book device by the end of September (first in small volume shipments only). So far we only got a rough photo of an industrial prototype and some details:
  • Model: M218A
  • CPU: ARM9 200MHz
  • Display and screen: 5-inch, the display technology is still unknown, but someone from inside said it has licensed an all-new Japanese technology
  • Resolution and color: VGA 640 x 480, 16-gray scale display
  • Memory card slot: SD card
  • Battery: 2750mAh Rechargeable Lithium-ion (unreplaceable, different battery models available for customers)
  • Battery charge time: PC USB 7 hours ; AC charger 4 hours
  • Maximum battery life: up to 25 hours
  • OS: Linux
  • Dimensions: 154mm x 110mm x 11mm (154mm x 110mm x 13.5mm with battery attached)
  • Weight: 215 gram (depends on what kind of battery model)
  • Formats: EBA, TXT, WOF, PDF, HTML, EBAML(EBA2.0), BMP, JPG, GIF, Animated GIF, MP3
  • Connectivity: USB, (WiFi in a next model)
  • Price: under 2,500 CNY (about USD $300)

It's cool!
In 2006, many ebook readers are released.
We have a lot choises.
I am interested in the multi-language and unicode support.
If it supports the aminated GIF, the display may not the epaper.
A new white STN LCD?
I will be glad to know the new display tech. ^_^

Does the Iliad support animated GIFs ?
By the way, is there a refresh rate on the Iliad ? When I saw someone writing the screen followed the stylus movement, or is it refreshing on demand ?
What's the real battery life in hours ?

2750mAh -- that is huge! I also noticed that it says "with battery attached" which probably means it's user replacable too. But a 5 inch screen? I'm not sure I'd want to go below 6 ... I'd have to actually see it to tell, of course.

Sony better gear up, and get us an update for the Sony Reader, or they're going to be alot of people switching over to Hardware that is just coming out.

This looks like a nice device, and at 300 bucks it isn't bad. I wonder if this is e-ink. From looking at the picture of the girl I doubt that this is indeed true, but who knows :/

Hurry up Sony.. I have money to spend

Nice shades of gray, but it's too small and the resolution is not that good, either.

Let's see if this technology is better than the e-ink, then.

Sony, wake up, they are knocking at your door!

I don't think Sony has anything to fear from this device. After all, everyone waiting for a Sony is waiting for the Sony DRM right? What content can you purchase for this device?

With that big battery and poor image quality I predict it uses a thin film plastic display with OLED's ink jet printed onto the plastic film.

The same points have me thinking LCD, scotty1024.

Unless they only plan on once a year recharges, I don't think there's any way they need a 2750 mAh battery to power any kind of 5" bi-stable display....

Wow!
Amazing!
The 16 level grey pictures

Memory chips: SDRAM 32MB
NAND flash 128M x 8bit (1Gbit)
NOR flash 512K x 16bit (8Mbit)
Card slot: SD 1.0 card slot (12.5MB/sec)
USB: USB 1.1

attached photo is the another side.

I guess the slots, at the bottom side, are USB port, power switch, and earphone set from the left to right.

Maybe they will ship it outside China or find a international retailer. I guess.

The scheme pictures show

1. SD slot and USB 1.1 port are on the upper side.
2. Standby button, power switch, and earphone set are on the bottom
3. It seems no possibility to change the battery by user.
4. The battery looks large.

My question:
How does the standby button work?
