Broken screen

My PRS650 was sitting in the case on my desk overnight. When I turned it on yesterday, the right quarter of the screen was white with a grey triangular shape at the corner. The reader works except that nothing shows up in that quarter of the screen.

Is this a mechanical failure or could the screen have been damaged sitting on the desk (it was laying on top of a bookstand)? I have accidental coverage from my company, but I can't in good conscience claim it since I don't know of anything that could have caused the damage. I bought it last May, so the warranty just expired.

Are the screens so fragile they can break like that? My PRS500 lasted 4 1/2 years until I finally dropped it twice on the floor.

The screens aren't exceptionally fragile and don't usually just fail for no reason but they really don't like any form of flexing/twisting which can sometimes happen accidentally, even by a cat or dog walking across it if pressure is not applied evenly.

I'd consider it accidental damage if it's possible that a pet, a book placed across it or something similar could have happened...

No pets. I do have a 3 year old, but I'm pretty sure he didn't touch it (though of course, you can never be 100% sure at that age). I just don't see how it could get damaged sitting on the desk.

The actual damage might have been done before you set it down on your desk, and the crack has just appeared either when you set it down or picked it up, that quite often seems to be how it goes with screen damage.

Something leaning against the screen, a slight twist or flex, even if you try and take good care of it and have it in a case, it can happen. I try never to carry mine in a bag next to any other hard objects as that seems to be a common way for it to happen. There's nothing you can do to fix it so you'll need to replace it, and you might as well use the accidental damage cover you have to do so.

I also agree that it was accidental damage and you should file an insurance claim.

After it is repaired, consider one of these cases for your reader:

http://www.amazon.com/Pelican-Produc.../dp/B006FR1KHE

http://www.amazon.com/BookArmor-Shie...bookarmor+sony

Both are very durable and should offer great protection.

You're kidding right? The insurance deductible is more than likely higher than the cost of just buying a new reader. That makes no sense whatsoever to even consider doing or suggesting.

Bad luck on the warranty. But if you bought itwith Visa or mastercard many warrantys are extended to two years.
