Parable of the Talents by Octavia E. Butler --- $0.25 (reg. $9.99)
Amazon | Google
Quote:
Winner of the Nebula Award for Best Novel: The powerful and compelling sequel to the dystopian classic Parable of the Sower

Lauren Olamina was only eighteen when her family was killed, and anarchy encroached on her Southern California home. She fled the war zone for the hope of quiet and safety in the north. There she founded Acorn, a peaceful community based on a religion of her creation, called Earthseed, whose central tenet is that God is change. Five years later, Lauren has married a doctor and given birth to a daughter. Acorn is beginning to thrive. But outside the tranquil group’s walls, America is changing for the worse.

Presidential candidate Andrew Steele Jarret wins national fame by preaching a return to the values of the American golden age. To his marauding followers, who are identified by their crosses and black robes, this is a call to arms to end religious tolerance and racial equality—a brutal doctrine they enforce by machine gun. And as this band of violent extremists sets its deadly sights on Earthseed, Acorn is plunged into a harrowing fight for its very survival.

Taking its place alongside Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, Butler’s eerily prophetic novel offers a terrifying vision of our potential future, but also one of hope.

This ebook features an illustrated biography of Octavia E. Butler including rare images from the author’s estate.

Another Octavia Butler book - Bloodchild: And Other Stories. $1.99

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008HALO0U

Six extraordinary stories from the author of Kindred, a master of modern science fiction—including a Hugo and Nebula award–winning novella.

Octavia E. Butler’s classic “Bloodchild,” winner of both the Nebula and Hugo awards, anchors this collection of incomparable stories and essays. “Bloodchild” is set on a distant planet where human children spend their lives preparing to become hosts for the offspring of the alien Tlic. Sometimes the procedure is harmless, but often it is not. Also included is the Hugo Award–winning “Speech Sounds,” about a near future in which humans must adapt after an apocalyptic event robs them of their ability to speak. “The Evening and the Morning and the Night,” another esteemed title in this collection, is a Nebula Award finalist.

In these pages, Butler shows us life on Earth and amongst the stars, telling her tales with characteristic imagination and clarity.

This ebook features an illustrated biography of Octavia E. Butler including rare images from the author’s estate.

I highly recommend any of Scalzi's works. If I were in the US and didn't already have them all, I'd buy the lot at that price.

I really liked the first vol of Old Man's War series . . .

But I felt the subsequent volumes didn't really live up to the promise of the first. don't get me wrong, they were good, but they didn't have that feeling of something 'special' that I felt with the first.

Isn't that a common problem with a series though GlenBarrington? I mean the first book of a series you are getting to know the world and the characters in it and how they will react to situations, but in the 2nd, 3rd, etc. you know all of that already and so the tension flags (unless new characters are brought in with new twists to the situation).

I know I'm in the minority, but I'm just the opposite. I couldn't get into Jane Sagan and the rest of the gang from the earlier stories, but absolutely loved Harry Wilson and the "B Team." I also liked the Cold War feel for the later stories - as much a political thriller as a sci-fi tale.

If someone out there isn't sure about the later volumes, "The Human Division" was serialized. You could pick up the first story ("The B Team") without much investment (in time or money) to see if it is for you.
