Does an unavailable ebook represent, to you, a lost book sale?
In another Thread the Poll question was asked "Does an ebook sale represent, to you, a lost print sale?", this Poll looks at the same problem from the other end -- "Does an unavailable ebook represent a lost book sale?"

If it is something that I really really want to read it, and not available as an ebook, then I will just get the paper back and read in my room so one one can see me do it

The last option. I'd have to really want the book, as the vast majority of books I only read once. Thus the biggest appeal of e-books to me was not having a physical book to find space for or hassle with selling or giving away (or dealing with the library).

It will take a great deal of convincing before I ever decide to buy a paper book again.

My actual hope is to replace as many of my current library as possible but I am no longer buying any hard copies of any book except references I must have that would not work out on monochrome readers anyway.

I no longer buy fiction that isn't in an ebook format. However, I do buy non-fiction if it isn't available as an ebook -- but I have to REALLY want it.

Only if the author refuses to allow for ebooks.
Some books, just aren't as good on ebook readers, and I still buy paper ones on those. |

Well... sometimes. Because when I run into a book that is unavailable, my next stop is either the pirate bay or a real book store. I don't feel guilty about using the pirate bay at all because publishers are making a mess of the transition to the internet ebook economy and their heavy handed use of DRM (which often make an ebook more restriced than a paper book). They are basically shooting themselves in the foot.
I don't mind paying the same price for an ebook but if so, it has to come with the same rights as a paper book. That is, I can read it then lend it to a friend (a one user at a time DRM is fine imo). |

For fiction, it would definitely mean a lost sale from me.

If I can't get the ebook I'll generally try to find the pbook used. If I can't find it that way, I have to REALLY want it bad before I'll buy it new.

I would REALLY have to want a book and be unwilling to either wait or to go to the library. I believe I may have purchased one pbook in the past two years.

I have to not only really, REALLY want the paper version--I have to be willing to convert it to an ebook. Chop the binding, scan the pages, OCR & correct them (and deal with the fact that I'll wind up skimming a great deal of the content when I do so), and format the results into an ebook.
Certainly not worth doing for fiction. Nor for any nonfic on a topic I'm only casually interested in. |

With the exception of specialty books, I don't buy very many paper books or hardback books. For example, rather than buy the hardback version of David Weber's latest book, I bought the audio book and will wait for the ebook to come out. There are a few authors whom I will buy in paper or hard back if there is no ebooks, but not many.

I think my ebook reader has me buying more paper books than I otherwise would. I think in the immediate future I'm going to hold off on buying any more ebooks, and only rely on freebies (and even some of those, I'll probably buy paper versions of).
