Florence Marryat (9 July 1833 – 27 October 1899) was a British author and actress. The daughter of author Captain Frederick Marryat, she was particularly known for her sensational novels and her involvement with several celebrated spiritual mediums of the late 19th century. She was a prolific writer, producing around 70 books, as well as newspaper and magazine articles, short stories, and works for the stage.

Originally published in three volumes in 1883. Sequence of contents has been re-arranged, and three additional stories included (“The Box with the Iron Clamps” [1868], “In This World or the Next” [1896], “Three Ghosts” [1870]).

This ebook is in the public domain worldwide because the author died more than 100 years ago, and contents were published prior to 1928.

I am planning to add your story, plus one called "Three Ghosts" I found in a magazine archive from 1870. But the OCR on that is not good, so it will be a bit before it is ready.
