Stop Calibre from modifying file?

Every time I open an ebook in Calibre, it modifies the ebook in some way, clearly changing the file size. This is... less than desirable. Is there a way to turn this "feature" off?

In the Viewer
Turn OFF things in Miscellaneous that SAVE (annotations, reading position...)

You could try going into the Miscellaneous preferences in the viewer and turning off the "Keep a copy of annotations/bookmarks in the e-book file, for easy sharing". You may also need to turn off the "Remember current page when quitting" option.

Is there a way to do this in 4.23? I'm still on the old version because I use a few plugins that are not compatible with version 5.

In 4.23 Miscellaneous settings, there is nothing like annotations or reading position.

Keep a copy of annotations/bookmarks in the e-book file, for easy sharing

Are we talking about the same thing?

Yours looks like settings for each individual ebook...which I can't seem to find...

Either way, I don't want to have to change the setting for each ebook I open. Is there a global setting that turns off modification of files for everything?

Don't forget to set the options in the editor to prevent the editor from making automatic changes.

1. Open the editor with an eBook
2. Edit > Preferences
3. Edit Settings > Uncheck Beautify individual files automatically when they are opened
4. Integration with calibre > Uncheck Update metadata embedded in the book when opening
5. click OK
6. Close the editor and do not save the eBook
7. DONE

No. If the option's unchecked it'll save the reading position info in the application data folder.

If you want to remove existing bookmark files, Quality Check plugin can find them, and then you can either use ebook-edit.exe or the Modify ePub plugin to delete them.
