Free (Kindle) Island of Shadows by Peter Tremayne [Irish Ulster Cycle Legend Fantasy]
Island of Shadows by British author Peter Tremayne (ISFDB, Wikipedia), perhaps best known as the author of the popular Sister Fidelma historical mystery series, is his standalone mythological historical fantasy novel set in ancient Ireland and drawing upon certain legends of the classic Ulster Cycle, telling a tale about the early life of Scottish warrior woman Scáthach (Wikipedia), who later became a combat teacher of the Irish hero Cú Chulainn (Wikipedia), as she journeys to discover her mysterious past and also obtain revenge after the adoptive father who raised her from a foundling babe is murdered by distinctively-marked strangers, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press' Venture imprint.
This was originally published in 1991 by Mandarin. Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else Amazon sells worldwide, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive-or-else program) Description A babe found in a casket in the open sea was fostered by the druidess Buimech and the great warrior Eola and given the name Scáthach… Years later, her adopted father is murdered and this sets Scáthach on a journey to discover her mysterious past. Led only by the triskele symbol carved on the casket she was found floating in and the medallion given to her by Buimech, Scáthach journeys out of Eireann to find her father’s murderers, who also bore the strange triskele symbol on their armor. The capable warrioress meets up with Flann Mac Fraech, a hotheaded young warrior banished from his clan by an evil tyrant, and Ruacán the Wizened, a wise druid who will guide her along her quest. She begins to amass ancient weapons, blessed by the gods and bestowed by quest-fulfilment, and moves toward Lethra, where the triskele symbol is rumoured to reign. The dangerous land of Lethra and its mysterious ruler, the High One, hold answers to Scáthach’s past, yet are shrouded in rumor of danger and strange dealings. The small band presses on to find what terrible battles await them at the end of the journey… Island of Shadows is a rip-roaring adventure with brave warriors and fierce leading ladies steeped in Irish legend and tradition spun by master storyteller Peter Tremayne. |
