I use it A LOT. I buy my books on the website, then sync my desktop app. Then I open Calibre and the newly bought books show up in obok

Exactly. I just find it simpler than downloading individual files from the website. one click to open the desktop app and it automatically grabs all the purchases since the last time, and done.

Obok gets Kobo synced books so the odd GUID like file names which are replaced by the title/author from the metadata. They are also kepub and I often use them as a comparison as to what kepubify/calibre produce.

If you are getting more than 1 or 2 books at a time, it's easier than downloading from the website and then importing into calibre.

You get kepubs from Kobo Desktop. But not much different from the epubs.

When I import using obok after syncing my desktop app, the books are all shown as "epub" in the Calibre 'format' column, not 'kepub', so they must indeed be very similar.

Books imported via Obok do not get the .kepub.epub extension (unless you are running a modified version). Since the original book does not have any file extension, when the filename is created, the extension is simply .epub. kepubify will not convert them since they are already kepub. I have never checked to see what KTE or calibre 8+ will do with them. Hopefully, just a rename to .kepub.epub while sending.

An kepub is simply an ePub with a mass of added spans and some simple JavaScript. On a Kobo ereader or app, those are made use of. On any other platform, they are treated as null operations and disregarded. If you happen to run Modify ePub, with the Strip Kobo DRM remnants, Strip spans and Remove inline javascript and files, it does a decent job of de-kepubifying the files.

Recently, I had an extra bit of CSS in the kepub version that wasn't there in the downloaded epub. It confused me: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=366596

When I first started using KOReader, it did not like kepubs at all. When it did open them, they often displayed poorly. The obok imports all open just fine in KOreader, so its handling of kepubs must have improved.

Obok does not do any editing of the internals of the file. What was supplied to your ereader/app by Kobo is what you will get.

That's why I said that KOReader must have improved its handling of kepubs. When I started using KOReader, most of my books were kepubs converted in Calibre, and KOReader often didn't handle them well. All the obok files I've sent over in the last couple of years have worked without any issues, so if they are kepubs, KOReader likes them better than it did in the past.
