Calibre: Metadata Search -> Wildcards possible?

hi there,

im new to this forum and hope you can help me. im using calibre -obviously ;-)- to manage my library.

In the title coloumn i name the books: <series> <volume> - <name> (f.i. Twilight 2 - New Moon) for sorting purposes.

Many of my books dont have the right Metadata. When i now search for new metadata there can be none found because the books name is "New Moon" not "Twilight 2 - New Moon".

Is there any way i can tell the metadata search to just ignore the first part of the title or show anything with any of the words from the title and the right author?

Hope you get what i mean and thanks for any answers.

have a nice day.

Not that I know of - the author and title are simply passed as search parameters to the sources so you need to match what they expect. If you want metadata to be found you ideally need to put series information into the Series columns.

I think that many people leave the books title in calibre alone, and ensure that the series info is correctly filled in.

However, they then use a feature of calibre called "plugboards" to ensure that when the book(s) are sent to their eReader, that the titles as displayed on the eReader are modified to include the series info.

This allows for both the easy management (including the retrieval of metadata) in calibre, and the simplicity of sorting by title on the eReader to see the series info.

See https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=118563 for a stickied thread on plugboards and see if that approach might solve your problems.

You probably want this:

{series}{series_index:0>2s| | - }{title}

to get: <series> <volume> - <name>

You can also sort the view inside calibre by sorting first based on title, then based on series, then based on author, to get all your authors correctly subsorted by series (ordered) and for non-series books, by title.

Using the Preferences ==> Advanced ==> Tweaks:

# Specify columns to sort the booklist by on startup

You can also click "Plugin Tweaks" there and add the following line:

sort_columns_at_startup = [('authors', 0), ('series', 0), ('title', 0)]

The title field is for the title. Adding stuff to this field for sorting is unnecessary. eschwartz points out a tweak to aid in sorting your library or simply clicking on column headers will quickly sort your library as you wish.

No if you have junk in a field then that junk will be used. If you decide to keep this info in the title column there is one method that might help. Use the Extract ISBN plugin to populate the ISBN then search for metadata. If you have an ISBN identifier you might get results that work for you.

Hi all,

thanks for your replies! i have the series column used as well. Just added the series name to the title for sorting purposes.

so i changed the title to the "real" title and used the tweaked sorting and the plugboards.
setting these things up was no problem.

thanks again and sorry that my answer took so long

have a nice weekend

If you have a need to switch between multiple sorts you can use the View Manager plugin. This plugin allows you to easily switch between different views of your library.
