Hi from London

Hi all.

I got directed to this forum by a colleague well experienced in e-paper.

I'm really here on behalf of my wife who has a slightly alternative application for an e-reader. She's a publisher of old-fashioned paper books and as a consequence has to lug around huge numbers of bulky manuscripts. She saw the news surrounding the release of the Amazon Kindle & wondered if such a device would save her aching back & a few trees in the process.

So for me, it's time to research not DRM or the availabilty of already published content, but the ease of conversion of manuscript formats and the readabilty of the various devices.

Who knows, introducing a device in the heart of a traditional publishers might help sway opinions there & see some more contect published in e-form.

How does the saying go? Better to take many small steps in the right direction than to make a great leap forward only to stumble backward. I hope you and your wife will find e-book reading enjoyable and who knows, maybe her publisher colleagues will also get infected by the e-book worm

The Sony Reader might well suit Mrs Jelboy. It takes rtf, txt and doc with no problems.

It is a trade-off. While the Sony is easier to get content into since it accepts the TXT, RTF, and DOC files that Patricia mentioned without the use of a conversion program (other than the Sony loader program eBook Library); it does not have a way of adding comments to the books. A pen and paper for notes is still required. The Amazon Kindle allows the direct input of notes about a book through its keyboard (a gloss) and supports (according to the documentation) TXT. For a reflowable document you need to convert it to Mobipocket.

All of that is moot as neither is sold in Europe at the moment. This leaves you with two (2) choices -- the CyBook Gen3 which has the same limitations as the Sony but will also allow HTML source files and the iRex iLiad which has a touch screen and a virtural keyboard along with a merge feature for exporting notes. The CyBook is around the same price range as the Sony and the Kindle while the iRex is about twice the price. The iRex does have a larger screen for easier viewing but a shorter battery life proving that there is no free lunch except salted peanuts.

Actually, while Sony do not sell in Europe, there are lots of Sony Readers (both new and used) available from Ebay.
But RWood's assessment of the respective merits of each reader is very useful.

Thanks all for the welcome & info.

I'm in the fortunate position of being able to test drive the Sony & Iliad - my company bought two of each for a research project.

Sourcing the Sony (if required) from the US won't be too much of a problem as we travel there frequently.
