Calibre "Failed: Convert book..."

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum, and thought I'd take a look at Calibre, and try to convert some books to ePub format. These are titles I have on my bookshelf at home, and I just want to experiment at this stage with them on my phone. Later, I want to raid the Guttenberg Project for some classics.

The books are in .lit and .lrf format. However, when I try to convert, I usually get an error message and the following data in the log file:
Code:
ERROR: Conversion Error: <b>Failed</b>: Convert book 1 of 1 (Child, Lee - Reacher 3 - Tripwire e-txt.txt)

I'm unsure if it is an issue with the files - I have a couple of them already converted, though it is a struggle and usually takes me several goes.

I looked through postings on this forum, and some have indicated issues can stem from cssutils. I have the latest release of Calibre, on a Win XP SP2 machine with plenty of memory and power. I have also downloaded the latest cssutils, but don't know what to do with the package next - it is in a .egg format and my unzipper doesn't recognize the extension.

Any help = even if it is a link, will be gratefully received.

Cheers,

Michael P

I'm new here too and having the same problem. I wanted to change an e-book from Kindle's format to Nook's format, and it didn't work. :-(

Solution?

Hi all,

I tried this again, and this time I altered the title on the right-hand side of the dialog, and it worked. Not entirely certain this was coincidence, though.

Cheers,

This is a problem with finding a place in the html to split the html into bite size chunks so that when converted to ePub the internal html chunks won't choke the reader. Typically the chunks have to be less than 300k. By default calibre shoots for less than 260k.

You can run the conversion with a directory in the debug area. This will produce, in the directory indicated, the html at various points in the process.

Open up the first html in Sigil then insert chapter breaks to split up the html. Then save the file as a Epub. I then take and run this epub through a epub to epub conversion to add in the cover, book jacket and get the font size, indents and spacing the way I like it.

If you try this you can further inquire in the Sigil forum.

Hi Walt, et al,

thanks for the advice - I shall try that.
