They're getting too big for Seattle and are about to do a Boeing. Boeing moved its headquarters from Seattle to Chicago in 2001.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Seattle HQ slowly lost importance to the new HQ and then one day ceased to exist.

Plus Seattle has some non-zero risk of being subject to major earthquake, tsunami, or volcanic eruption/mudflow, and the way things are going, rising ocean levels. And while it is a beautiful location, it might be getting harder to get people to move there. When I drove through there a couple of years ago, it took a couple of hours to transit, and it was not commute time.

Yep, we have those hazards here and transportation is pretty poor. I-5 is a joke trying to get through Seattle. I avoid it. I get all I need out in the burbs.

Why Amazon's plan to build a second headquarters could be a 'marketing ploy'

Quote:
Amazon's plans to build a second North American headquarters, announced on Thursday, is highly unusual, even for a company this big, and could be more of a "marketing ploy," some academics said.
Quote:
"I think the name 'headquarters' is a little bit of a marketing ploy. I mean they just want to have a big office in another city," Felipe Caro, a professor at UCLA's school of management, told CNBC.

Caro said cities and states are willing to do anything to attract tech companies these days because they create lots of new jobs and could spur other companies to open shop as well, boosting the region's overall economy. In return, companies are given outsize benefits, mostly in the form of tax breaks, but their economic impact far outweighs the loss in taxes, he said.
Quote:
"It's not only uncommon, it's almost unheard of," Useem said of Amazon's plan to open a second headquarters. "It's symptomatic of how Jeff Bezos kind of breaks all the rules along the way: Why not build a second headquarters and see how it works out?"

But if there's any company who's able to pull it off, it has to be Amazon, Caro said. Amazon's corporate culture of keeping different business units almost run like independent companies could make it relatively easy to run two massive headquarters separately.

I'm curious what is the lowest annual salary Amazon considers highly paid since Amazon writes that all the approximately 50,000 employees at the new headquarters will be highly paid.

Amazon is not a single company but more of a conglomerate of somewhat disparate businesses so having two or more Headquarters is not at all impossible.

Breaking the pure tech companies' management (Kiva, Lab126, AWS) apart from the retail and logistics companies actually makes sense.

As I read the news, the employees in the headquarters will be highly paid. But they didn't say that all the workers in the headquarters will be employees of Amazon, as opposed to being, say, janitorial contractors.

As for what is the starting point for "highly paid," we don't know. But I'm pretty sure they would regard any union-negotiated salary to be more than highly paid.

I'm currently reading The Golden Passport: Harvard Business School, the Limits of Capitalism, and the Moral Failure of the MBA Elite. According to author Duff McDonald, Amazon has a higher percentage of MBA's than other tech companies because of emphasis on keeping down costs, including wages, for the non-elite part of the workforce. And, by the way, this April 2017 release is only $2.99

The scandal here isn't solely Amazon's fault. Local government should not be using my tax dollars to bribe the world's Amazons to locate here. Bidding wars, for tax incentives to be given a particular company, should be illegal nationwide (and hopefully beyond that - now there's something to add to NAFTA).

Consider:

Quote:
I can’t recall a situation where a major corporation had two “equal” headquarters. This was often a promise in the bank mega-mergers of the 1990s — but one city always became the real HQ. . . . .

Things could get dicey in a serious recession or other downshift where Amazon must make choices, including which location becomes the real headquarters amid a severe restructuring and downsizing.
Recommendation for Toronto: In return for the inevitable tax incentives you guys offer, require Amazon to allow US-style Kindle Overdrive library lending. To Bezos, any associated costs would amount to a rounding error and thus are highly unlikely to be a deal-breaker. If the man wants to get out of the US, nothing to do with books is going to stop him.

The press release says (separately) 50,000 employees and 50,000 highly paid jobs. I don't care how those 50,000 are split between official Amazon employees and defacto Amazon employees. I am just gobsmacked that any company needs 100% of its headquaters employees to be highly paid if there are 50,000 of them. I do believe that the ratio between the pay at the top and the pay at the bottom is far too great in almost all USA based companies, but I don't see how everyone can be highly paid. Or, is Amazon an outpost of Lake Wobegon and everyone is above average?

Well, that's part of why I want a number, maybe they think $5/hour is highly paid.

"Highly paid" usually means they are paid better than workers in similar jobs in the area. So it would vary according to the locality

If this comes to pass then yes they will be closing the first HQ at some point. They might promise the state to keep it open for a certain number of years, but during those years they will be laying off the staff at least twice a year until they can close it up for good.

And their concept of highly paid will be just a little bit more then the average salary others are being paid in similar positions.

Then those people will find themselves stuck at that salary for as long as they are there.

Don't believe for one second that Amazon is interested in improving anyone's wages.

Well now, my first thought was I hope they don't move down here. We don't have enough workers.
As to the paychecks, yeah sure we will start you off at a quarter more an hour than other companies. Maybe $1 more for management positions.
Won't finish the rest of the thought.
