connected 2 cables to them and nothing appeared on my computer...Is there any possibility that it is permanently broken?

Can you see traces to Tx underneath the PCB layers? Can you “scratch” your way to them?

Oh I succeeded by changing the TTL board from PL-2303 to CH-340 and using shorter and newer cables, as it displayed unreadable messages such as " *&)_)** " at first, making me thinking of broken received data caused by unstable connection.

I've did the jailbreak on kindle pw3 5.13.4 by serial-port

Hello, help me, I can't put any hotfixes. The log file is there, error 007 when installing hotfixes. Failed to install: JB hotfixes, MRPI, Kual ( i try to install all of this fixes in succession). I do not know how to attach a text file, I am new to the forum, so here is what is written in the log-
Loaded logging functions
Didn't find existing developer key
Unable to create developer key (1)
Updated permissions for developer key
Enabled developer flag
Finished installing jailbreak, restarting...
Later I will describe in detail how I did jailbreak, I used a programmer and a 341a voltage divider, I will make a little more detailed guide about soldering and choosing parameters, some things were not obvious when working with 341a.

the jailbreak was made successfully. Kual is up, everything is working. Wait after the 26th for detailed instructions on soldering, using the ch341, using the ttl converter, and even the arduino nano.

I was also able to jailbreak my KT3 running FW 5.13.6

Here's how it worked:

1)At first I had to download the correct Firmware for my device (In my case it was "factory_KT3_5.8.0_initial.bin" )
2)Then I renamed it to update.bin (necessary in a later step) and put it to the root directory of my kindle
3) I connected the Serial-USB-Converter to my kindle
4) I startet the device and interrupted the booting sequence by pressing the "enter" button to get into uboot
5)Here I entered the command "run diags_boot" to get into diagnostics mode
6)After the diagnostics mode was fully loaded I pressed enter to get into kindle Login
7)I logged in with "root" and password "mario"
8)When I got logged in I entered "reboot"
9)Now in the boot sequence there was an entry to get into recovery mode. It was shown up just for about 1 second. When this entry was shown I had to press "enter" to get into this mode.
10) Now I got into recovery mode.
11) Here I had 10 seconds time to choose one of the operations.
12) I entered "u" for "Update using update*.bin file on FAT Partition"
13) When the update was finished I was on Firmware 5.8.0

So I just had to follow the Software jailbreak tutorial!

Here's the log from PuTTY:

I was also able to successfully jailbreak my kindle KT3 using this method running fw 5.13.6. The thing I had to do different is that to paste update.bin file in the root directory and then unplug the battery first then unplug the usb cable by doing so the kindle does not get a chance to delete the update.bin file then i started my kindle up and then it started downgrade as soon as i entered this command "run diags_boot". And after it was successfully downgraded to FW 5.8.0 I performed the usual software jailbreak.

Serial Hacking the PW10

Greetings Wizards,
This board is wonderful and full of hope for me! I received a PW10 as a gift and it's basically impossible to get any Paperwhite anymore that hasn't been automatically updated past 5.13. Mine is 5.14.1. I have managed to crack open the case and carefully remove the battery connection (man they really went all out with the adhesive on this one) but don't see the same connections as on the PW3 or other models... where should I look for the connections on a PW10? I ordered this unit will this be sufficient? This will be my first hardware hack, so I thank all of you for your attention and patience and wisdom.

TL;DR of the post above, it's currently not possible and may never be possible to serial jailbreak anything later than a KT3 without an unlock code from Amazon (which they don't provide).

I performed the downgrade of my PW3 with fw 5.14.3 to fw 5.9.6.1 using battery trick but after booting there was only blank, white screen. I was able to normally transfer files via USB and the usual screen was showing up and also holding power button showed up usual pop-up but nothing else, just white blank screen. Any ideas why?

I've waited like 0,5h but I was too impatient to wait longer and updated it to 5.14.2. It was such a relief to see everything back as it was. I was afraid that there is no coming back from that. Phew!

Since there is a new software jailbreak I will probably use it instead of going with the hardware one. I had the serial converter connected and succesfully communicating both ways but the white screen was a little bit too much for me today

I just got a "new" second-hand KT3 to play with, and while I was de-registering/re-registering and setting it up, it downloaded the updated firmware ("Update Your Kindle" went from grayed out to visible), and then it auto-installed 5.14.3.0.1 on reboot. The only thing I really want is to be able to disable the screen timeout so I can use it as a display for a small web-app I wrote that works and auto-refreshes in the built-in browser. Unfortunately, this is not possible on the latest firmware even with "~ds".

I actually have an old computer with a serial port header on the motherboard. I couldn't find a serial port module to connect to it, but if I wire the pin-outs on the motherboard to the correct spots on the KT3, I should be able to do a serial flash without needing to acquire a USB-to-Serial or BT-to-Serial adapter, right (obviously this will be easier if I can find a module to plug into the motherboard so that I can more easily access the individual pins/lines)? After I get it wired up, I should just establish a connection to the appropriate COM port as in Part 3, and I can proceed to downgrade to an older firmware and/or jailbreak? Thanks!

Doh, I had done several hours of reading, but had completely missed this on the previous page.
