Is anyone familiar with classical literature? I mean the Greeks and Romans; they were always getting up to no good. Unfortunately for the OP they seemed to favour gay relationships.
Was Helen of Troy older than Paris? That relationship caused the Trojan war. |

There are a lot of historical cases, also. Two off the top of my head are Catherine of Aragon/Henry VIII and Josephine/Napoleon, neither of which went well.

Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine - she was 11 years older than he and that marriage definitely had its moments.

All I can think of is a play from the 1950s, so out of your time frame: Sweet Bird of Youth.

There is H. Rider Haggard's She. At two thousand years old Ayesha is rather more than "slightly" older than Leo, but it does fit the requirement of unsuccessful liaison (both times).

There's always Harriet Marwood, Governess. Perhaps not exactly what you had in mind.

In Great Expectations I have always assumed that Estella was a few years older than Pip, but I can't seem to find explicit confirmation of that. Anyone know for sure?
If I'm right, then the relationship between Pip and Estella is pretty toxic for most of the book - and this article says the original ending wasn't a happy(ish) one, and others convinced Dickens to change it. ... Just seemed like the sort of literary thing that might fit with the OP requirements. |

To all who commented:
Thank you all for your advice and information. My bookish hero cites Sentimental Education and La Dame. At first, I didn't think that Samson and Delilah were suitable - but then I remembered that my hero was brought up as a Methodist, and Biblical phrases often comes spontaneously to him. So S&D are also briefly cited. I've written 12,000 words now, and I'm enjoying it. |
