I was reading through GIMP's 2.10.18 changelog, and they posted this:
Quote:
GIMP's preferences words it: "Check for Updates (requires internet)" and their About Page has a manual button too: |

I just do not understand this fear of just checking if an update exists. It downloads nothing and no update is done. It does not cause any problems if the user is offline. FWIW, Sigil also uses the internet to do its CSS validation when directed to do so. Again that fails when the user is offline.
Any modern OS does much much more on startup including checking for mail, time synching, caching favourite pages, checking for their own updates, starting up a number of daemons to monitor ports, etc. Why does this one check for the single value from the version.xml file hosted on github really matter in any way? We do not get to see the github server logs so we have no way to track anyone ever, and the huge volume of traffic that hits github makes our checks totally meaningless to them. |

Anyone that it would truly bother, in my opinion, will already know how to prevent Sigil from accessing the internet. Those it doesn't bother, won't be looking for ways to turn it off.
We don't check every time Sigil is launched, and we only check once per new version so there's no "nagging." I truly don't get it either. But I'm tempted to give users the option to disable the check if only to get people to shut up about it. But if we do that, then people surely WILL turn it off, and every third support question will become, "Oh. I didn't know there was a new version out that fixed that. Sorry." |

Because I use Google's dns servers to check whether to bother with trying to access the version.xml file on github or not. It's simply the fastest go-no-go internet connection check I've personally tested. And these days, "Google" has become a trigger word (like Amazon and Facebook) for some people who have nothing better to worry about.

However, I still think a manual button to check updates for Sigil can be helpful. It can stay in the help menu and when click it we can directly connect the version.xml file on github to check updates. It can coexist with the current check update function.

Actually, no it can't coexisting with the current code. The connection test is integrated into the embedded python code that checks for updates. Adding a manual update check that checks the version.xml file on github directly will involve modifying the existing function or creating a new one. And how long should everyone wait for such a manual check to fail when there's no active connection? 5, 10, 15 seconds (maybe a minute for dial-up users)?

FWIW - When there's a new release of S or PE, it appears at top of this list
Get it on my phone RSS Feed too, it dings me when there's something new. BR |

Attached is the very simplest of Sigil plugins that can be used to manually check the latest version of Sigil (and provide a download link for the installer/app).
It might not be completely fool-proof, but it should work. Last edited by DiapDealer; 03-02-2020 at 12:35 PM. |
