The New York Trilogy by Paul Auster is $1.99 at Amazon US.

This is a collection of three shorter books published separately originally, so $1.99 for all three is a good deal.

I'll admit that I read the first book, City of Glass, and I just didn't get it. I suspect these books are best served by reading in a group or college class. Or maybe I'm just not an expert reader

Quote:
Moving at the breathless pace of a thriller, this uniquely stylized triology of detective novels begins with City of Glass, in which Quinn, a mystery writer, receives an ominous phone call in the middle of the night. He’s drawn into the streets of New York, onto an elusive case that’s more puzzling and more deeply-layered than anything he might have written himself.

In Ghosts, Blue, a mentee of Brown, is hired by White to spy on Black from a window on Orange Street. Once Blue starts stalking Black, he finds his subject on a similar mission, as well.

In The Locked Room, Fanshawe has disappeared, leaving behind his wife and baby and nothing but a cache of novels, plays, and poems.

This Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition includes an introduction from author and professor Luc Sante, as well as a pulp novel-inspired cover from Art Spiegelman, Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic artist of Maus and In the Shadow of No Towers.

This is just an update. The entire Morland Dynasty (35 books) series by Cynthia Harrod-Eagles is discounted now at both Amazon and Kobo. The early books are .99 or $1.99, but all the rest are now discounted to $3.99 (which is huge, because this year is the first time they have discounted this series. The series is complete.

This is historical fiction that follows one family from its creation in the Middle Ages up to and including the market crash of 1929. The first book is a bit choppy, but hard to stop reading once you get into it. I don't know how long the discounting will last. This author also writes the popular Bill Slider detective series.

I put this kind of stuff into Alternate Reality as well. While it has a historical base, it's not really historical fiction (nor is it YA). Whether you want to add it as a subcategory of Science fiction (where time travel would fall) or fantasy is up to you. I just leave it separate as the only real science fictiony thing about it is the time travel.

The Friends of Pancho Villa by James Carlos Blake is $1.99 at Amazon US

Quote:
Violently waged from 1910 to 1920, the Mexican Revolution profoundly transformed Mexican government and culture. And Pancho Villa was its “incarnation and its eagle of a soul”—so says Rodolfo Fierro, the narrator of Blake’s astonishing novel, an ex-con, train robber, and Villa’s loyal friend. Killers of men and lovers of life, the revolutionaries fought for freedom, for a new Mexico, for Villa. And in return, they shared victory and death with their country’s most powerful hero—from “one of the greatest chroniclers of the mythical American outlaw life” (Entertainment Weekly).

Animal Farm by George Orwell has dropped to $2.99 as part of the US Kindle Daily Deal for today (Sunday), which includes 80+ science fiction books. I'm not quite sure I'd consider this science fiction, more of a classic, so I'm posting it here.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Animal-Farm-F...dp/B003K16PUU/

The blurb is pretty brief:

Quote:
George Orwell’s famous satire of the Soviet Union, in which “all animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.”

It Can’t Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Written during the Great Depression, when the country was largely oblivious to Hitler’s aggression, it juxtaposes sharp political satire with the chillingly realistic rise of a president who becomes a dictator to save the nation from welfare cheats, sex, crime, and a liberal press.

A cautionary tale about the fragility of democracy, it is an alarming, eerily timeless look at how fascism could take hold in America.

Today's big deal at Amazon UK is all 12 Poldark novels for £0.99 each.

The recent BBC TV series follows the first seven novels quite closely. The rest are set ten to twenty years later.

Highly recommended, for historical drama fiction. (Set in Cornwall from 1783 to 1820.)

The Big Rock Candy Mountain by Wallace Stegner is $4.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Bo Mason, his wife, Elsa, and their two boys live a transient life of poverty and despair. Drifting from town to town and from state to state, the violent, ruthless Bo seeks out his fortune—in the hotel business, in new farmland, and, eventually, in illegal rum-running through the treacherous back roads of the American Northwest.

Stegner portrays more than thirty years in the life of the Mason family in this masterful, harrwoing saga of people trying to survive during the lean years of the early twentieth century.

The Legion is the tenth in the excellent IMO Eagles of the Empire series by Simon Scarrow. It has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle and Kobo US - a rare price drop for one of Scarrow's titles in the US. This series originally started out sort of mystery-ish in a military/historical setting, but has drifted to more military/historical fiction with some puzzles, so I'm posting it here.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GW4QDFY
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...he-empire-10-2

Spoiler:
Quote:
IF YOU DON'T KNOW SIMON SCARROW, YOU DON'T KNOW ROME!

THE LEGION is the action-packed tenth novel in Simon Scarrow's bestselling Eagles of the Empire series. Perfect for fans of Bernard Cornwell and Conn Iggulden.'Scarrow's [novels] rank with the best' Independent

Egypt, AD 49. Cato, one of the youngest Prefects of the Roman army, and Centurion Macro have a tough posting: to track down and destroy a gang of former gladiators who have turned to piracy. Driven by vengeance, these hardened brutes have been defiling temples, sinking Roman ships, and slaughtering men, women and children.

What's worse is that they are doing it all under the name of Macro and Cato, in an attempt to stir up a rebellion against the occupying forces. And it's working. If Macro and Cato don't stop the pirates in time, it could be the beginning of the end for the Roman Empire...

There's a bit more info about the series (my opinion of it, at least ) and some links to other not-too-outrageously priced titles in the series in this previous post: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh....php?p=3810757

And finally, the newest (for now, new one coming later this year) title in the series, The Blood of Rome, is also very reasonably priced for a most-recent title at $3.99.

Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...he-empire-17-2

Spoiler:
Quote:
THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

The gripping and action-packed new adventure in Simon Scarrow's bestselling Eagles of the Empire series, not to be missed by readers of Conn Iggulden and Bernard Cornwell.

It is AD 55. As trouble brews on the eastern fringes of the Roman Empire, Prefect Cato and Centurion Macro prepare for war...

The wily Parthian Empire has invaded Roman-ruled Armenia, ousting King Rhadamistus. The King is ambitious and ruthless, but he is loyal to Rome. General Corbulo must restore him to power, while also readying the troops for war with Parthia. Corbulo welcomes new arrivals Cato and Macro, experienced soldiers who know how to knock into shape an undermanned unit of men ill-equipped for conflict.

But Rhadamistus's brutality towards those who ousted him will spark an uprising which will test the bravery of the Roman army to the limit. While the enemy watches from over the border...

An absolute epic of American literature. At #4.99, it's a bargain. Not because of it's length, but because of its heart.
