Seems to me that argument cuts both ways. You can neither say Amazon is in the majority, nor in the minority. So your "epub is king" comes from...?

Based on my personal experience of living in Japan for 3 years, the #1 dedicated ereader that I have seen in people's hands is Kindle.
However, most people still buy these pocket size paperbacks or they are on the phone.

I have no idea where you get epub king thing from...

Article I linked was based of a report by Impress R&D. It's not a guess.
Can you link to a research backing your claim?

It's not necessary to know Amazon's sales figures to be able to say "40% of Japanese ebook readers are buying from the Kindle store" - it's simply necessary to conduct a survey of Japanese people and ask them where they buy their ebooks from. Which is precisely what the people who released these figures did.

They are missing a market by shutting ePub out.
Not really. Most people are using either tablets or their phones to read, not ereaders. For those folks, it's easy to download the Kindle app and read no matter where their tablet or phone comes from. I have a kindle app on my Nook HD+ and the Nook app on my Kindle HDX. Neither of them are on my itouch since I can't read that small. LOL.

The bigger problem is not the format, but the georestrictions. There's a bunch of books at Amazon UK I'd buy, but I can't get around the restrictions or my card won't work there. I have been able to get around another company's restrictions though, and happily those books had no DRM on them.
