Solved - Debrick a Demo Kindle 8th Gen - KT3
Hi there,
Am 02xda2, joined this community today (was browsing since a few days) Picked a Demo Kindle 8th Gen unit from grey market with an intention to convert it to normal and read many a posts on these forums about that. Connected serial ports on the motherboard to a FTDI232 (used LDO 1117 for 1.8V)(did not connect the power point - saw a post without that on xodustech.com by one Mr. Travis Brown) and I could see the kindle thru Putty. So far so good… I could not get to diags mode with ‘bootm 0xE41000’ though the device was rebooting promptly and stopping at Kindle System Login (a demo book running on the display) and while messing around got into Recovery mode and accidentally pressed ‘4’ (option 3 for mmc over usb was not working) which incidentally formatted the ‘mmc0’. Tried to enter Recovery again, could not and tried to flash ‘update_KT3_5.8.0_initial.bin’ thru ‘bist - fastboot’ my win64 did not recognize the device and fastboot device never came up on system. (could extract the below files from above firmware with 'kindletool' - data.stgz, data.stgz.sig, rootfs.img.gz, rootfs.img.gz.sig, update-J8-heisenberg_eanab-044.dat, update-J8-heisenberg_eanab-044.dat.sig, u-boot.bin, u-boot.bin.sig, uImage and uImage.sig) And now Kindle boots but sits on ‘uboot’ Now need help to revive the kindle, please…. And this noob (am not a geek by any measure) now Calling on geekmaster, knc1, ixtab, NiLuJe, twobob and other champions from the corner…. Well there are too many ! Please… Last edited by 02xda2; 02-06-2018 at 04:01 AM. Reason: solved |

Hi. Couple of quick questions.
What is your country of origin? What is a grey market? If your device was reported as stolen before you bought it, there is no help available. |

india Grey market is where goods imported thru unofficial channels are dealt with. And those goods brought to the country by people visiting other countries are also end up there. One can exchange used goods also there for new/used goods. Don't think this one is reported as stolen, since am dealing with the store for more than 15 years and so far none of the devices got into any such issues. (If it's reported as stolen, how to check that?) |

Firmware, hmm, no idea how to check that? (well there's nothing on the device since 'mmc0' is formatted) from Putty Log b4 format Booting Linux on physical CPU 0x0 [0.000000] Linux version 3.10.53-lab126 (jenkins-official@sjc10-jbuild09.sjc10.amazon.com) [0.000000] CPU: ARMv7 Processor [412fc09a] revision 10 (ARMv7), cr=10c53c7d [0.000000] Machine: Freescale i.MX6 SoloLite (Device Tree), model: Heisenberg P0 Last edited by 02xda2; 02-04-2018 at 01:21 PM. Some progress after mmc0 erase:
Followed mobileread and got the uImage (kernel) flashed thru xy-modem and now the KT3 boots kernel image and can get into Recovery Menu, but… Could not load and flash any ‘update.bin’ files through ‘E’ option (Export FAT in Recovery). Tried bist-fastboot and only once got the device recognized and the driver installed but again could not push any files from PC. In a tunnel now and expect someone to throw some light for a way out, please….. Quote:
ps: @knc1 can I pm you for diags_kernel please and have KT3 with serial connection ready(may be that can help, since this is a demo unit) Last edited by 02xda2; 01-26-2018 at 12:52 AM. |

xy-modem was broken that last time anybody tried it, perhaps it is fixed in Gen8 devices. Option E only exports USB storage, it will not (by itself) load any packages. You must remove the USB cable (which cancels the export) and then use the appropriate menu command to start the install process. I think you would have much better luck if you followed the tread written for the purpose you are trying to accomplish. |

Thank you very much knc1, let me try find those how to recover from 'erase all' situation and revert. In the meantime can the diags_kernel be obtained from somewhere, if available?

It is available from anyone who has that device, runs the backup script I have posted, and is willing to share.
(It extracts the kernels (both) and tests the package it creates for each.) No, I don't have a link to the backup thread, but it is a thread started by myself, search those in the advanced search. I did find the "recover from erase all" thread. Start around here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...32&postcount=8 You will have to skip a lot of noise posts made by people, but we do eventually get the device repaired. And check the attachments, there are a lot of examples of what to expect at each step (we spent a lot of time on it). Last edited by knc1; 01-25-2018 at 02:22 PM. |

Hey knc1 Thanks a Lot !
Some more progress, now continuing from where I was stuck earlier with the 'E' option (well after your reply), ran that option, waited for a few seconds and connected USB, PC detected kindle and got 'update_bin' transferred, came back to Recovery and option 'U' flashing update. Now the kindle is up and running... ps: touch seems to be not working, did all these tinkering anything to do with it or the kindle needs to be reassembled, any idea? They work when outside of the case.
The connectors and flat conductors are rather delicate, check if maybe something has been knocked lose in the handling. |

Had a doubt about the touch and re-assembly part since there is a circuit on the backcase and the new touch technology adopted by Amazon from 7th gen devices needs the device to be in assembled condition for the touch to work (assumed). Attached are the back case photo and ifixit step about touch display. After re-assembly touch works think now the jailbreak exercise begins Last edited by 02xda2; 01-27-2018 at 03:29 AM. |

I don't see where you mentioned it, but that is a KT3 (there are 2 two "8th generation" Kindles).
The KT3, like the KT and KT2 use an IR scanning touch screen, not capacitive (makes a difference). |
